Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
A deep amber liquid captured within a gracefully curved bottle commands immediate attention against a dramatically atmospheric charcoal background suffused with wisps of smoke-like mist, establishing Laurent Hainaut's Zacapa Reserva Limitada 2019 Branding and Design as a masterwork of premium spirits presentation where the warm mahogany and burnt sienna tones of the aged rum create a luminous focal point that appears almost internally illuminated against the cool neutral surroundings. The compositional architecture employs a classical bilateral arrangement with the bottle positioned to the left of center and its cylindrical presentation tube to the right, creating visual dialogue between container and contents while the diagonal energy flows from the woven petate band encircling the bottle's lower third upward through the elegant calligraphic typography. The chromatic orchestration reveals extraordinary sophistication in its deployment of a predominantly neutral palette accented by carefully calibrated warm metallic elements, with the gold and champagne tones of the decorative bands, embossed motifs, and typographic elements establishing hierarchical emphasis against the pearl gray and charcoal gradations of the cylindrical tube. Surface texture articulation demonstrates remarkable range from the smooth glossy bottle glass through the intricate dimensional weave of the natural fiber band to the matte paper finish of the outer packaging adorned with flowing linear motifs suggesting wind-swept grasses or ceremonial plumage rendered in delicate gilded strokes. The lighting paradigm employs a three-quarter illumination from the upper left creating subtle gradations across curved surfaces while establishing a gentle specular highlight on the bottle's shoulder and producing soft reflected warmth in the liquid's depths. Spatial construction maintains elegant simplicity with shallow depth of field ensuring both objects occupy the immediate foreground while the atmospheric background recedes into indeterminate darkness punctuated by subtle smoke effects that enhance the sense of precious rarity and aged refinement. Edge treatment varies purposefully between the crisp definition of typography and label boundaries and the softer transitions where objects meet the surrounding atmosphere, creating visual breathing room while maintaining overall sharpness appropriate to commercial presentation.
Zacapa Reserva Limitada 2019 is a limited edition packaging design for an aged rum. The brown label with gold foil lettering complements the amber and golden hues of the liquid. The signature petate band, a woven straw band made in special colors for this edition by local Guatemalan craftswomen, wraps around the bottle. The canister design blends washes of colors and textures inspired by the Guatemalan landscape. On the canister, the petate band and the signature band with tasting notes are presented in gold hues.
