Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
Warm amber wood and luminous golden tones establish the chromatic foundation of Liang Fang's LiHao Hotel lobby, where vertical timber battens rise with rhythmic precision along both lateral walls to create a spatial cathedral of natural materiality and contemporary refinement. The composition operates through strict bilateral symmetry, with the central axis anchored by a magnificent bonsai specimen displayed upon a dark circular table that functions as both focal point and philosophical centerpiece, its organic asymmetry providing essential counterpoint to the architectural order surrounding it. Above, a spectacular ceiling installation cascades downward in two sweeping wing-like formations composed of amber-tinted glass or acrylic elements suspended on delicate cables, suggesting avian flight or traditional architectural eave systems translated into contemporary luminous sculpture. The chromatic palette demonstrates masterful restraint, building from warm oak and honey tones through touches of verdigris in landscape murals glimpsed through glazed partitions, with cool grey-blue marble flooring featuring organic veining patterns that echo mountain topography or flowing water. Illumination emerges from multiple integrated sources including recessed ceiling spots creating a constellation effect, warm uplighting within wooden display shelving, and ambient glow from the suspended installation itself, producing layered luminosity that avoids harsh shadows while maintaining dimensional clarity. The spatial organization employs classic tripartite division with reception desk centered at rear, flanked by symmetrical display cabinets housing ceramic vessels and scholarly objects, while landscape paintings visible through mullioned glass panels extend visual depth beyond the immediate architectural envelope. Textural dialogue operates between smooth polished stone, warm matte wood, cool reflective glass, and the organic presence of living vegetation, creating tactile richness that invites contemplation. The perspectival system draws the eye inexorably toward the central axis through converging floor patterns and ceiling geometry, while the double-height volume establishes ceremonial grandeur appropriate to arrival and transition.
