Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Aerial perspective reveals GOA (Group of Architects)'s Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel nestled within an expansive verdant landscape where architecture and nature achieve profound symbiosis through carefully considered spatial relationships and material restraint. The composition presents a masterful bird's-eye view that positions the primary architectural complex along a diagonal axis running from lower left toward upper center, creating dynamic visual momentum across the picture plane while establishing clear hierarchical relationships between built form and natural environment. The roofscape emerges as the dominant formal element, rendered in deep charcoal and slate gray tones that read as cool graphite against the warm viridian and hunter green of the surrounding tree canopy, establishing a sophisticated complementary temperature dialogue. The hotel complex unfolds as an interconnected series of pavilion structures featuring traditional pitched roof profiles reinterpreted through contemporary minimalist sensibility, with clean horizontal eaves and precise geometric articulation suggesting refined vernacular abstraction. Water bodies flanking the composition to left and right create reflective surfaces of muted teal and pewter, their mirror-like quality amplifying the sense of tranquil equilibrium while establishing natural boundaries that frame the architectural intervention. The golden hour illumination bathes the distant horizon in warm amber and soft apricot tones, creating atmospheric gradation that transitions from brilliant warmth at the skyline through neutral midtones to cooler verdant saturation in the foreground, demonstrating masterful deployment of aerial perspective principles. Compositionally, the work employs an asymmetrical balance where the architectural mass anchored in the lower left quadrant finds counterweight in the expansive landscape extending toward the upper right, creating visual breathing room while maintaining dynamic tension. The path system weaving through the grounds reads as silver-gray ribbons that establish secondary directional vectors, guiding the eye through the composition while revealing the thoughtful circulation patterns characteristic of resort hospitality design. The textural contrast between the dense, organic canopy textures and the crisp, geometric roof planes creates figure-ground relationships of exceptional clarity, each element distinctly legible yet harmoniously integrated into the unified whole.

Muh Shoou originally means the last fruit left by farmers on the tree with the special intention of sharing it with animals in nature so as to pray for the harvest of the coming year. That’s just where the name of Muh Shoou Xixi comes. The architect attempts to present the natural beauty of Xixi Wetland - coldness, quietness, uniqueness, wildness and seclusion - to visitors through the design and evoke the resonance between human and the primitive nature through the architecture. While rambling in the Wetland, it's hidden in the dense forest quietly with poetic aesthetics.
