Fengqi Chang’an Aesthetics Museum Exhibition Hall

Warm amber light glows from within the central pavilion of GOA (Group of Architects)'s Fengqi Chang'an Aesthetics Museum Exhibition Hall, creating a luminous focal point against the cool grey-violet atmosphere of a rain-laden twilight sky, where the composition unfolds across a horizontal panorama dominated by the reflective surface of a still water court that occupies the entire lower register of the image, functioning as both a physical element and a mirror that doubles the architectural presence above, the primary structure rises in two tiers with the lower volume featuring rhythmic vertical timber screens in deep umber and raw sienna tones that create a permeable membrane between interior and exterior, while the upper clerestory level presents larger glazed openings framed in terracotta-hued cladding beneath sweeping dark graphite roof forms whose gentle curves evoke traditional eave profiles translated through contemporary materiality, a mature deciduous tree stands sentinel at center-left on a grass island emerging from the water, its organic silhouette providing organic counterpoint to the geometric precision of the built forms, human figures animate the scene including visitors sheltering under the covered walkways and individuals visible through the illuminated interior spaces engaged in contemplative activities, the rain falls in visible diagonal streaks across the entire visual field creating an atmospheric veil that softens edges and enhances the meditative quality of the tableau, secondary pavilions flank the composition at left and right featuring similar material vocabularies of vertical timber screening and low-pitched roof profiles establishing a cohesive architectural language, the color temperature contrast between the warm interior illumination and the cool exterior atmosphere creates profound spatial depth while the perfect mirror reflections in the water court generate a sense of metaphysical doubling that extends the architecture infinitely downward, compositional balance achieves asymmetrical equilibrium through the off-center placement of the primary pavilion counterweighted by the tree mass and flanking structures, the overall mood evokes profound tranquility and shelter amid the gentle drama of natural weather phenomena, suggesting a sanctuary where architecture mediates between human activity and elemental forces.

Inspired by nature, traditional Chinese gardens, and landscape paintings, through the combo of different sizes of functional forms, architects combine various courtyards and inlay the elements of verandas to create a continuous, flexible, and rich garden space. Besides the usage for the exhibition, the building takes the experience of visitors in the garden into account. The courtyards are set up according to various functions, including the ones for display, communication, meditation, activities and etc., which are blended with each other through crisscrossed corridors.
