Marugo Restaurant

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Futoshi Masuda's Marugo Shinbashi Restaurant presents a compelling study in contemporary hospitality design where dramatic lighting architecture dominates the visual field through an extraordinary sculptural ceiling installation featuring rhythmically arranged circular apertures that emit warm amber illumination against a dark atmospheric envelope. The compositional armature follows a sophisticated diagonal thrust from upper left toward lower right, with the monumental curved ceiling element serving as the gravitational anchor while establishing a dynamic counterpoint to the horizontal datum lines created by the seating arrangements below. The chromatic orchestration employs a masterfully restrained palette wherein deep umber and chocolate browns of the textured wall surfaces dialogue with the rich carmine of the tufted banquette upholstery, while the illuminated perforated panels create fields of warm cream and honey-toned light that punctuate the otherwise shadowed interior. The lighting paradigm operates on multiple registers simultaneously: the ceiling's perforated ovoid form functions as both architectural element and primary light source, casting a diffused zenithal glow that models the space volumetrically, while secondary wall-mounted perforated screens echo this motif and establish visual continuity through material repetition. Spatial depth articulates through careful layering wherein the foreground presents a polished wooden counter rail and upholstered seating, the middle ground contains the intimate dining arrangements with numbered tables clustered beneath the luminous canopy, and the background reveals glazed apertures offering glimpses of exterior urban activity. The tufted leather banquette demonstrates exceptional craft in its deep button-tufted capitonné technique, creating a tactile counterpoint to the smooth metallic ceiling surfaces and the rough textural quality of the oxidized copper-toned wall finishes. Edge behaviors alternate between the crisp geometric precision of the circular light apertures and the softer transitions where warm illumination bleeds into surrounding shadow zones, establishing a sophisticated play between definition and dissolution that contributes to the space's atmospheric intimacy and theatrical presence.

Marugo Shinbashi is a wine bar and restaurant interior located on a busy street in Shinbashi, Tokyo. The circle of the Marugo brand sign is repeated through the interior to improve visibility and recall. A wine red tiled wall and a buttoned bench carry the circular motif, while colored copper plates of Takaoka copperware cover a full wall. Cube brick tile and mahogany wood complete the material palette. Indirect lighting was adjusted with a full-size mockup so that light reads clearly from each circle. The space covers 105 square meters.
