Twist Bridge Pedestrian Overpass

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Ge Wang's Twist Bridge Pedestrian Overpass commands immediate visual attention through its sinuous white form that arcs gracefully across a multi-lane thoroughfare, establishing a striking dialogue between organic sculptural gesture and the rectilinear urban fabric surrounding it. The compositional architecture follows a dynamic diagonal that sweeps from the lower left foreground toward the upper right middle ground, creating a powerful leading line that guides the eye along the bridge's elegant trajectory while simultaneously dividing the picture plane into distinct spatial zones. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated harmony of cool and warm neutrals: the bridge itself presents in pristine titanium white that catches and reflects the diffused daylight, while the surrounding environment offers complementary tones of warm ochre in distant high-rise towers, verdant viridian and sap green in the mature tree canopy flanking the roadway, and cool grays of the asphalt infrastructure below. The tonal structure demonstrates a high-key luminosity with the pale sky occupying approximately forty percent of the upper register, featuring wispy cumulus formations in soft blue-white gradients suggesting midday atmospheric conditions. Spatial construction employs atmospheric perspective with marked clarity in the foreground bridge structure transitioning to softer focus and reduced chromatic saturation in the distant architectural skyline. The bridge's sculptural form exhibits remarkable torsional geometry, appearing to twist elegantly as it spans the vehicular corridor, with the deck surface transitioning from a horizontal plane at the left abutment through a graceful rotation that presents the guardrail edge toward the viewer at the apex before completing its rotation at the right terminus. Surface treatment contrasts the smooth, apparently composite or steel construction of the bridge membrane against the textured organic forms of the surrounding vegetation and the utilitarian concrete of adjacent structures. Edge behavior demonstrates precise hard transitions at the bridge's profile against sky, while softer atmospheric transitions characterize the distant urban horizon. The single supporting column, positioned with structural elegance slightly off-center, rises with slender efficiency to meet the deck in what appears to be an integral junction, eliminating visual clutter and maintaining the sculptural purity of the overall form. Lighting conditions suggest diffused natural illumination from a high sun position, creating gentle modeling across the bridge's curved surfaces without harsh shadows, while the vegetation exhibits the characteristic warm-cool temperature gradients of foliage in strong ambient light. The mood evokes contemporary optimism and progressive urban design philosophy, celebrating the harmonious integration of pedestrian infrastructure within vehicular-dominated landscapes.

The pedestrian overpass of Huagai Mountain on Daliang Street, Shunde, is presented to the citizens in a light, silk-like form. The streamlined railing design of the bridge guides the visual extension of pedestrians on the bridge, and its unique spatial form allows vehicles driving under the bridge to capture the rhythm evolution of the building volume at different distances. At the same time, this bridge connects the park walkways of Huagai Mountain and Fengling Mountain, creating a walking network for citizens to get close to nature and move between the city and the mountains.
