Pastoral Substation Public Infrastructure

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Hang Chen's Pastoral Substation Public Infrastructure presents an aerial perspective revealing a masterfully orchestrated integration of utilitarian power infrastructure within an expansive pastoral landscape, where the compositional architecture follows a sophisticated diagonal dynamic moving from the lower left waterway toward the upper right residential developments, creating a compelling visual narrative of harmonious coexistence between technological necessity and natural environment. The chromatic palette demonstrates remarkable restraint and intentionality, dominated by verdant greens ranging from the deep viridian of mature tree canopies to the brilliant chartreuse and cadmium yellow of flowering rapeseed fields that carpet the surrounding terrain in luminous golden warmth, while the central substation structure presents a carefully calibrated combination of neutral grays, crisp whites, and strategic vermillion accents that punctuate the industrial forms without overwhelming the naturalistic context. The spatial organization reveals three distinct zones functioning in visual dialogue: the serpentine waterway establishing an organic boundary along the lower and left edges, the geometric precision of the infrastructure compound occupying the compositional center, and the rectilinear housing blocks creating an ordered backdrop in the upper register. Illumination appears to emanate from a high afternoon sun positioned to the upper left, casting soft shadows that articulate volumetric form while maintaining the warm, golden atmospheric quality characteristic of late spring or early summer light conditions. The facility itself demonstrates contemporary sustainable design sensibilities through the prominent photovoltaic arrays adorning rooftops, their deep blue-violet surfaces creating deliberate chromatic counterpoint against the surrounding organic warmth. Particularly noteworthy is the hexagonal pavilion structure at the water's edge in the lower left quadrant, its cellular geometry suggesting both honeycomb naturalism and contemporary parametric design vocabulary, while adjacent recreational courts featuring geometric patterns in coral, turquoise, and cream establish programmatic diversity that transforms mere infrastructure into genuine public amenity. The overall atmospheric resonance conveys progressive optimism, suggesting that essential utilities need not exist in opposition to environmental beauty but may instead become catalysts for landscape enhancement and community engagement.

Pastoral Substation converts a 220kV substation into an open urban space. It features solar panels, kinetic devices, and green paths, blending clean energy with eco design. Drawing from the site's industrial past and natural surroundings, it provides event venues and field zones. The project reimagines infrastructure as a shared civic asset, turning the substation from an isolated facility into a community resource.
