Urawa Garden Bldg. Office

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Nobuaki Miyashita's URAWA GARDEN BLDG. Office presents a commanding vertical composition wherein a slender tower rises with crystalline precision against an expansive cerulean sky, the architectural mass organized through a tripartite facade articulation that establishes visual rhythm through material contrast and proportional discipline. The central glazed curtain wall, rendered in cool blue-gray tinted glass with dark mullion framing, occupies the primary vertical axis and functions as the compositional spine, flanked by symmetrical white-clad solid masses that provide visual anchoring and thermal relief through their matte opacity against the reflective transparency of the glazing. The fenestration pattern demonstrates rigorous horizontal banding with floor-plate expression creating measured cadences ascending the tower's height, culminating in a slightly recessed crown element that subtly differentiates the uppermost level through setback and enhanced glazing depth. The chromatic palette operates within a restrained analogous harmony of cool tones: the pale ivory of the flanking volumes provides warm neutrality against the steel-blue glass, while the charcoal-toned framing elements and dark spandrel panels introduce necessary tonal contrast that defines structural hierarchy. Atmospheric conditions present optimal clarity with direct midday illumination casting crisp shadows along the recessed glazing planes and creating subtle modeling on the projecting white volumes at left, where raking light reveals the dimensional quality of the cladding panels. The spatial organization establishes clear foreground-middle ground-background stratification: an accessible ground-level plaza with young deciduous trees and paved surfaces occupies the immediate foreground, the tower commands the middle ground with assertive verticality, while adjacent structures of varied materiality and scale provide contextual urban backdrop. The architectural language resonates with contemporary high-rise office typologies, demonstrating refined detailing in the curtain wall proportions, clean edge conditions where materials meet, and sophisticated integration of mechanical systems within the facade rhythm, all executed with precision suggesting accomplished contemporary practice in commercial architecture.

This office redefines urban integration by embedding a public passage into its design. Inspired by historical street grids, it blends a floating glass cube facade with open plazas, linking past and present. The dynamic interplay of transparency and solid mass reflects the city’s transformation, fostering collaboration and creativity. Thoughtfully incorporating natural materials, greenery, and art, the space enhances user experience while promoting sustainability. Embracing urban flow and inclusivity, it becomes a landmark, revitalizing city life and strengthening community engagement.
