Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2025
Kris Lin's Snow Park Exhibition Center reveals itself through a dramatically sculpted ceiling installation where hundreds of geometric white polygonal forms cluster and cascade across the overhead plane, creating an immersive three-dimensional topography that transforms the interior architecture into a dynamic field of crystalline masses suspended above a curvilinear exhibition hall whose smooth, flowing walls embrace a central architectural model displayed beneath floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking exterior waterscapes and landscaped grounds. The compositional architecture establishes a striking vertical dialogue between the heavily articulated ceiling realm and the serene horizontal datum of the viewing floor, employing a sophisticated figure-ground relationship where the aggregated ceiling elements function as positive sculptural mass while the continuous white surfaces of walls and floor provide expansive negative space that amplifies the installation's volumetric presence. The chromatic palette restricts itself almost entirely to an achromatic spectrum dominated by pure titanium white across ceiling facets, architectural surfaces, and structural elements, with subtle gradations into warm ivory where ambient illumination pools within recessed polygonal cavities and cool pearl gray appearing in shadowed valleys between clustered forms, while the transparent glazing introduces external color notes of cool cerulean from sky reflections and muted sage from landscape elements visible beyond. Luminosity operates through carefully orchestrated diffused natural daylight entering horizontally through the continuous ribbon of glazing, supplemented by concealed artificial sources that create soft ambient wash across ceiling textures, producing a complex shadow morphology where each geometric protrusion casts gentle umbra into adjacent recesses, generating a rhythmic alternation of highlight and shadow that accentuates dimensional depth and surface articulation without harsh contrasts, while the overall lighting paradigm maintains a luminous, ethereal quality suggesting filtered daylight through atmospheric haze. Spatial construction employs a dramatic compression-and-release strategy where the densely populated ceiling zone creates visual weight and textural complexity in the upper register while the open floor plane with minimal furnishing allows unobstructed circulation and contemplative distance from which to apprehend the overhead installation, establishing a clear foreground occupied by the architectural model on its curved display plinth, a middle ground of fluid circulation space, and a background defined by the fenestration revealing exterior contexts, all unified through the consistent material palette and curvilinear geometries that soften the angular ceiling elements. Surface treatment across the installation demonstrates meticulous attention to facture, where each polygonal module presents smooth matte finish that absorbs and diffuses light evenly, eliminating specular reflection in favor of subtle luminosity variations that emphasize three-dimensional form, while the supporting architectural envelope exhibits similarly refined material handling with seamless joints and continuous surface flow characteristic of contemporary parametric design execution. Edge behavior throughout the composition displays sophisticated variation, with hard crisp edges defining individual geometric ceiling modules to maintain formal clarity and structural legibility, contrasted against the soft lost edges where curved wall surfaces merge into floor planes and where the accumulated ceiling mass dissolves into the perimeter void above the glazing, creating a dynamic interplay between geometric precision and organic dissolution. The installation evokes stylistic affiliations with contemporary parametric architecture and computational design methodologies, suggesting kinship with algorithmic approaches to form generation where repetitive geometric units aggregate according to programmed rules to produce emergent complex systems, while simultaneously referencing natural formations such as ice crystal accumulations, mineral deposits, or biological growth patterns like coral colonies or cellular structures, positioning the work within contemporary discourse surrounding biomimicry and digital fabrication technologies applied to architectural scale. The atmospheric resonance established by this spatial composition generates a contemplative psychological tenor, inviting sustained upward viewing and meditative engagement with the interplay of light, shadow, geometry, and void, while the pristine white environment suggests clinical precision and technological sophistication balanced against organic growth metaphors embedded in the clustered arrangement, creating an affective register that oscillates between the sublime scale of natural phenomena and the controlled rationality of human design intervention, ultimately proposing the exhibition space itself as primary experiential content that frames and enhances whatever architectural visions the central model represents.
As the exhibition center for the world's largest indoor ski resort, the project integrates the design language of Ice, Light and Art, to create an immersive exploration experience through six themed scenes, showcasing ice and snow culture alongside urban innovation. Its flexible spatial layout ensures a seamless transition from exhibition to future commercial operations, delivering lasting economic and cultural value while driving the rise of ice and snow tourism in southern China.
