Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Luminous porcelain floor tiles establish the spatial foundation for Chen Yu Ching's Frames Of Memory Apartment, their cool gray surfaces rendered with mirror-like reflectivity that doubles the compositional elements through precise specular reflection, creating a sense of expansive horizontal infinity anchored by the tactile materiality of polished ceramic substrate. The composition employs a sophisticated one-point linear perspective system with the vanishing point located in the middle-ground dining area, establishing depth recession through the architectural enfilade from the foreground living zone through the transparent reeded glass partition toward the background glazed wall and suspended ceiling elements. The left third of the visual field contains a floor-to-ceiling architectural niche finished in a muted sage-gray tone, its rectilinear void punctuated by horizontal display shelving that presents curated domestic objects including a pale ceramic bowl and vertically stacked volumes suggesting literature or design monographs, while below this aperture a deeper shadow-box alcove extends toward the floor plane, creating a rhythmic vertical cadence of solid mass alternating with carved negative space. Adjacent to this sculptural wall element stands a vertical reeded glass partition executed in translucent material with fine parallel vertical striations that fragment and diffuse transmitted light, the screen mounted within a slender aluminum or stainless steel frame system employing visible barn-door sliding hardware suspended from a ceiling-mounted track, this semi-transparent membrane functioning as spatial divider that maintains visual connectivity while articulating threshold between adjacent functional zones. The middle-ground presents a dining ensemble composed of a rectangular table executed in richly grained walnut or similar dark hardwood with pronounced figure and warm reddish-brown undertones, surrounded by upholstered dining chairs featuring curved bentwood or solid wood frames in complementary mid-tone taupe or greige fabric, the seating positioned to suggest intimate gathering and shared ritual. Suspended above this dining composition hangs a statement lighting fixture of exceptional sculptural presence: a horizontal linear chandelier featuring three opalescent spherical glass shades mounted on curved metal arms finished in warm brushed brass or bronze that sweep in graceful asymmetrical arcs, the luminaires emitting soft diffused illumination with gentle warmth suggesting incandescent or warm-spectrum LED sources approximately 2700-3000 Kelvin, their milky white translucent globes creating focal points of concentrated luminosity that anchor the composition's tonal center. The background reveals a built-in storage wall composed of a grid of translucent reeded glass panels identical in material treatment to the freestanding partition, their regular rectangular modules creating a rhythmic lattice that conceals storage while maintaining luminous presence, the horizontal white frames articulating clear geometric order and establishing visual continuity with the sliding partition's material vocabulary. The right portion of the composition presents glimpses of adjacent architectural spaces: a framed artwork or mirror with linear metallic framing, a glass vase containing fresh botanical elements suggesting pink cherry blossoms or similar delicate florescent branches, and built-in millwork details including what appears to be integrated seating or storage elements in coordinated neutral tones. The overall chromatic palette demonstrates sophisticated restraint, built upon a foundation of cool neutral grays ranging from pale silver-gray on walls and ceiling planes to medium charcoal-gray on the architectural niche, warmed by strategic injections of natural wood tones in the dining furniture and the metallic brass accent of the lighting fixture, with all color relationships supporting spatial legibility and atmospheric serenity. Lighting design reveals careful layering: the dominant pendant fixture provides ambient and task illumination for the dining zone, while recessed ceiling fixtures suggest supplementary general lighting, and natural or artificial light transmitted through the reeded glass panels creates subtle luminous glow, with all sources contributing to the overall high-key tonal structure that emphasizes spaciousness and clarity. The spatial construction employs transparent and translucent materials strategically to maintain visual flow while articulating functional boundaries, the reeded glass serving as permeable threshold that neither fully divides nor entirely connects adjacent zones, allowing light and silhouette to pass while obscuring precise detail, a gesture toward privacy within openness. Surface treatments emphasize smooth, reflective, and finely finished materials: the polished floor tiles, the satin-smooth painted walls, the luminous glass panels, the refined wood grain, and the brushed metal hardware all contributing to an overall impression of crafted precision and material quality. Edge behavior throughout the composition favors crisp architectural definition, hard edges delineating planes, volumes, and material transitions with geometric clarity, while the curved arms of the lighting fixture introduce organic counterpoint to the prevailing orthogonal geometry. The work suggests affiliation with contemporary minimalist residential design traditions informed by Scandinavian modernism's material honesty and Japanese spatial philosophy's emphasis on threshold, translucency, and refined simplicity, while also demonstrating awareness of mid-century modernist vocabularies in the furniture silhouettes and lighting design. The atmospheric register communicates serene domesticity, contemplative calm, and understated refinement, suggesting spaces designed for mindful inhabitation, daily ritual elevated to aesthetic experience, and the quiet pleasure of beautiful functional objects within carefully orchestrated spatial sequences. The viewer position implies standing at the threshold of the living zone, invited to progress through the layered spatial sequence toward the dining area and beyond, the composition's perspectival structure and open circulation suggesting welcomed entry and fluid movement through interconnected domestic realms.
This project reinterprets North American neoclassical aesthetics within a contemporary Asian residence, balancing proportion, materiality, and cultural context. A refined 1 to 4 paneling system extends seamlessly into built in storage, while moisture resistant materials suit the climate of Taiwan. Curved ceiling treatments and layered lighting soften the space, guiding movement and enriching the spatial experience with subtle elegance.
