Theater House Residential Home

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Warm amber illumination emanating from within Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja's Theater House Residential Home creates a luminous beacon against the deep cerulean twilight sky, establishing an immediate visual dialogue between interior sanctuary and exterior environment that defines the compositional hierarchy of this architectural photograph. The three-tiered structure presents a commanding vertical organization with the upper residential volume featuring expansive glazing framed by dark charcoal architectural bands and planted balcony edges where ornamental grasses catch golden uplighting, creating feathered silhouettes against the illuminated interior spaces visible through sheer curtains. The middle register reveals the primary living zone through floor-to-ceiling glass panels supported by cylindrical concrete columns, offering an unobstructed view into warmly lit domestic spaces including dining and kitchen areas rendered in tonal harmonies of cream, taupe, and natural wood. The foreground presents a sophisticated landscape architecture composition featuring tiered hardwood decking in rich umber and mahogany tones ascending via broad steps, integrated planter beds with tropical vegetation including dracaena specimens and cascading trailing plants that soften the geometric hardscape, and a sunken courtyard or pool area glimpsed at the lower level where woven basket furniture suggests intimate outdoor gathering spaces. The chromatic palette orchestrates a sophisticated interplay between the cool ultramarine and Prussian blue of the deepening sky, the warm cadmium yellow and Naples yellow of interior illumination, and the natural earth tones of timber, stone, and vegetation creating an analogous harmony punctuated by complementary temperature contrasts. Compositionally, the image employs a modified golden section with the primary architectural mass occupying the upper two-thirds while the landscaped terraces provide a stabilizing visual base, leading lines created by deck edges and planter walls guide the eye inward toward the illuminated living spaces. The atmospheric quality suggests blue hour photography capturing that magical transitional moment between day and night when artificial and natural light achieve perfect equilibrium, the environmental mood evokes subtropical residential luxury emphasizing indoor-outdoor connectivity and biophilic design principles that blur boundaries between built form and natural landscape.

Theater House is a residential house in Jakarta, Indonesia. The design connects each part of the house through a split-level layout, from the entrance to the centre of the home. The main space is an open living and dining room with openings on both sides that face the outdoors, allowing natural light and air to circulate. A planter box above the entrance portal forms a soft visual buffer and gives a garden view from within. The upper floor holds the bedrooms, each with access to a roof garden. Textured paint in three tones of grey and natural wooden planks form the finishes.
