Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025

Zhao Yunhai's Zhenbaoguan Museum presents a masterfully orchestrated interior space where the dramatic geometric ceiling structure commands immediate visual attention through its bold interplay of ebony-hued linear elements against luminous white panels, creating a dynamic overhead architecture that recalls the angular sophistication of traditional East Asian roof forms reinterpreted through contemporary design sensibilities. The compositional armature establishes a clear hierarchy through the ceiling's descending angular planes, which employ a modified golden section organization radiating from the upper left corner toward the lower right, generating powerful diagonal vectors that guide the eye through the expansive volume. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated analogous harmony of warm neutrals, anchored by the honeyed amber tones of the herringbone parquet flooring that provides thermal warmth against the cooler ebony of millwork and structural elements, while ivory upholstery and cream-toned walls establish luminous middle values. Illumination emerges from multiple sources including concealed cove lighting beneath the marble-clad upper wall band creating an ethereal atmospheric glow, integrated linear fixtures within the slatted ceiling elements producing rhythmic striations of warm light, and focused accent spotlights within the display niches along the rear wall that showcase collected objects against backgrounds featuring undulating golden patterns suggestive of landscape or cloud forms. The spatial organization demonstrates sophisticated layering across foreground, middle ground, and background zones, with the reception desk at right establishing immediate threshold, the seating arrangement in the middle ground creating intimate conversational groupings upon the warm wood floor, and the illuminated display wall providing visual terminus while suggesting depth through its cellular organization. Surface qualities range from the polished reflective character of the marble banding to the matte absorption of upholstery textiles, the tactile grain of wood flooring, and the linear rhythm of the slatted ceiling creating optical texture through repetition. The integration of traditional artistic elements including ink wash paintings and scholar's objects within the display cases establishes dialogue between heritage and modernity, while the overall atmospheric resonance suggests refined contemplation and cultural appreciation within a space that honors tradition through distinctly contemporary formal expression.

The client loved to collect wine, client wanted to have a large wine wall to display, and to talk about Chinese wine culture when showing guests around, each bottle of wine has its own representative of Chinese culture. When designed the wine wall, thought of the Oriental Symmetry Aesthetics as an art philosophy, and the wine wall was displayed in a balanced way on both sides of the main corridor, and this symmetrical form has a solemn sense of order.
