Crochet Floor Lamp

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Alexey Danilin's Crochet Floor Lamp commands immediate visual attention through its luminous curvilinear form, a continuous loop of warm white LED illumination that traces an elegant paisley-like silhouette against the dramatic backdrop of deeply folded chocolate-brown velvet drapery. The compositional architecture demonstrates sophisticated asymmetrical balance, with the illuminated sculptural element positioned slightly right of center, its organic curves creating dynamic tension against the rigid geometry of the brushed brass tripod base. The chromatic palette operates within a restrained yet sumptuous range: the dominant warm golden-white of the light source, approximately 3000K in color temperature, casts a honeyed luminosity that creates soft gradients across the neutral taupe floor surface and illuminates the subtle vertical striations of the matte wall at left. The brass structural elements, finished in a warm satin gold reminiscent of Renaissance gilding, provide chromatic continuity between the cool neutrals of the environment and the warm radiance of the light source. Shadow behavior reveals the quality of illumination: soft penumbral shadows extend from the tripod legs across the floor, while the light creates a gentle atmospheric glow on the gathered drapery folds behind, emphasizing their sculptural depth through differential illumination of peaks and valleys in the fabric. The spatial construction presents a shallow stage-like depth, with the lamp occupying the primary pictorial zone against the theatrical backdrop, creating an intimate presentation space that emphasizes the object's sculptural presence. The edge quality of the illuminated tube presents a fascinating duality: the outer silhouette reads as a crisp, hard-edged contour against the dark ground, while the interior of the light source itself exhibits the characteristic soft diffusion of LED strip lighting within a frosted housing. The overall mood evokes sophisticated domesticity, suggesting contemporary interior spaces where functional illumination transcends mere utility to become sculptural statement, embodying design philosophies that celebrate the intersection of craft tradition and technological innovation.

Crochet is a floor lamp inspired by knitting, one of the oldest decorative crafts. The metal structure resembles the interweaving of spokes during knitting, and the flexible light emitting diode cord recalls woolen threads. The matte cord forms a smooth oval, and its weight and bending behavior were studied so that the lamp looks balanced from every angle. The metal tubes are collapsible, and a cast metal element joins them at the center. Placed at the top of the lamp, the cord gives soft light for reading, work and rest.
