Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Ralph Appelbaum Associates's Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart Exhibition presents a breathtaking synthesis of natural history presentation and contemporary museum architecture, where the viewer's eye is immediately drawn upward to an extraordinary luminous canopy rendered in gradients of chartreuse, viridian, and golden amber that evokes dappled forest light filtering through a primordial tree canopy. This translucent ceiling membrane, supported by an elegant structural armature of dark steel branches that bifurcate organically like ancient tree limbs, establishes the primary focal point while simultaneously creating an immersive atmospheric envelope for the specimens below. The compositional architecture follows a pronounced axial symmetry with a central corridor drawing the eye toward a glowing azure portal in the middle distance, creating perspectival depth through one-point linear recession. Flanking this central axis, crisp white exhibition plinths with angular geometric facets present paleontological and zoological specimens in a harmonious dialogue between contemporary minimalist display design and the organic forms of the natural world. In the upper left quadrant, the magnificent curved tusks and trunk of a mammoth model emerge dramatically into the space, its warm umber and ochre tones providing crucial chromatic counterpoint to the cool whites and grays of the architectural envelope. The right side balances this visual weight with what appears to be a whale skeleton suspended in ethereal levitation, its bleached bone tones creating rhythmic linear patterns against the luminous ceiling. The lighting paradigm combines the diffused overhead illumination from the graphic canopy with warm accent spotlights that model individual specimens and create intimate pools of focused attention. Classical architectural elements of the historic building envelope, visible through tall windows with their warm incandescent interior glow, provide temporal layering that connects contemporary exhibition design to institutional heritage traditions. The terrazzo flooring in neutral gray establishes a grounding horizontal plane that allows specimens and architectural interventions to float with visual clarity, while the overall spatial composition achieves that rare quality of monumentality tempered by accessibility, inviting contemplative wandering through deep time.

Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart is an exhibition design for two central halls of a natural history museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Both halls are dedicated to evolution and biodiversity. In the Evolution Hall, six thematic islands with large historic specimens are arranged around a central multimedia table. The Ocean Hall is bathed in blue light and organized by marine habitats, from sea shores to the deep sea. A cutaway model of a sei whale carries a video projection. Daylight from the former courtyards is filtered and colored.
