Atlas Multifunctional Bed

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Harun Ayaydın's Atlas Multifunctional Bed commands attention through its masterful orchestration of natural oak wood and pristine white lacquered surfaces, creating a visual dialogue between warmth and clarity that anchors the domestic interior with sophisticated restraint. The compositional architecture places the bed decisively in the lower two-thirds of the frame, its horizontal rectangular form establishing a stabilizing foundation while vertical slatted railings introduce rhythmic repetition that draws the eye across the longitudinal axis. These rounded oak spindles, numbering approximately twelve per section, demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship in their uniform spacing and softly turned profiles, their honey-amber tonality suggesting careful selection of quarter-sawn timber that reveals subtle grain variations ranging from pale straw to deeper caramel. The chromatic harmony operates within an analogous warm palette, the oak elements resonating with the light ash-toned engineered flooring while the white frame provides calculated contrast without harshness. Spherical wooden feet in a bleached oak finish elevate the structure, their geometric perfection offering visual levity and a touch of playfulness appropriate to the nursery context. Behind the bed, a vertical ribbed wainscoting in cream establishes textural counterpoint to the horizontal mattress plane, while above, a mural depicting continents, hot air balloons, vintage aircraft, and wildlife unfolds in muted sage, dusty blue, and terracotta, extending the thematic narrative of exploration and wonder. The circular area rug depicting planetary orbits in deep navy with concentric rings of warm yellow, vermillion, and verdant green introduces chromatic punctuation while echoing the spherical motif of the bed's feet. Ambient daylight, apparently entering from a source beyond the left edge, bathes the scene in even, diffused illumination that reveals surface textures without harsh shadows, suggesting north-facing orientation or overcast conditions. The spatial construction employs shallow depth with the bed positioned parallel to the picture plane, creating an accessible, inviting presentation that honors the object's functional identity while celebrating its formal achievements.

Atlas is a multifunctional bed designed for babies, children and teenagers. The bed is wide enough for a parent to sleep beside a child when needed. Atlas can be used with a bedside cradle during the newborn period, and later with attachable safety barriers that support both safety and independence. The bed is made entirely of oak wood and finished with a water based varnish that contains no lead. Edges and lines are rounded, and the slats are closely spaced. Rounded feet and a panel under the bed distribute weight evenly for long term use.
