Pu Tang Restaurant

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025

Zhao Yunhai's Pu Tang Restaurant unfolds as an architectural meditation on luminosity and craftsmanship, where the eye is immediately captured by the elaborate coffered ceiling system constructed entirely of warm-toned timber latticework that filters and diffuses ambient illumination into a honeyed atmospheric glow permeating the entire spatial volume. The compositional architecture employs a centralized focal schema, with a large circular dining table positioned slightly left of center, anchoring the middle ground while the intricate grid of wooden slats overhead creates a powerful geometric armature that draws the gaze upward and outward simultaneously. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated analogous harmony of raw sienna, golden ochre, and pale buff tones, punctuated by the cooler neutral gray of the polished stone floor that provides essential visual relief and grounds the warmth above. The luminosity conditions reveal concealed backlighting behind the slatted screens, producing a soft diffused radiance that eliminates harsh shadows while creating gentle gradients across the rhythmic vertical elements of the wall partitions. Spatial construction demonstrates masterful layering, with the foreground presenting a marble-topped surface in soft dove gray veining, the middle ground occupied by upholstered dining chairs in cream leather surrounding the substantial round table, and the background revealing additional dining areas glimpsed through the translucent screened walls. The textural vocabulary celebrates the tactile warmth of natural wood grain visible throughout the ceiling coffers and wall lattices, contrasted against the smooth cool surfaces of stone flooring and the soft yielding quality of leather upholstery. Edge treatment favors crisp architectural precision in the structural wooden framework while allowing subtle softness where light bleeds through the screen apertures. The atmospheric resonance suggests refined tranquility, an invitation to contemplative gathering, where traditional craft sensibilities meet contemporary spatial sophistication in service of elevated hospitality.

By designing a visual corridor, the design team introduces nature views into the site.Ecological stones and waters as well as moss and fern are planted to presenting a natural landscape. The central floor slab of the building was removed during renovations in order to divide the original building scale, create an inner courtyard for plant growth, and introduce sunlight that increased the lighting of each room.
