Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Yi-Ning Lo's Impulse Pilates Space unfolds as an elongated horizontal vista where neutral-toned materiality establishes immediate atmospheric serenity, the composition governed by strong horizontal banding that divides the architectural volume into precisely calibrated zones of activity and repose, a sophisticated deployment of linear perspective channels the eye along a central axis flanked by symmetrically arranged Pilates reformer machines whose white frames and black leather straps create rhythmic punctuation across the foreground plane, the compositional architecture adheres to principles of bilateral symmetry tempered by subtle asymmetries in the background spatial configuration where multiple doorway apertures introduce darker tonal values that contrast with the pervasive lightness, chromatic restraint dominates with an analogous harmony of warm neutrals ranging from palest cream through beige to soft taupe and gentle gray, accented by the organic warmth of medium-tone wood grain visible in vertical ceiling coffers and architectural trim elements, the wood reading as walnut or similarly rich species with visible linear grain patterns that introduce textural complexity without chromatic saturation, black elements provide crisp visual anchors through the reformer hardware and straps creating a sophisticated neutral palette punctuated by disciplined dark accents, one notable departure occurs in the mid-ground where a single salmon-orange cushion on a reformer introduces a carefully calibrated warm hue that activates the composition without disrupting tonal unity, illumination operates through multiple systems including recessed linear slots in the ceiling's wood-clad sections casting gentle ambient glow, concealed cove lighting along perimeter edges producing soft indirect wash, and what appears to be natural diffused daylight filtering through translucent white drapery panels suspended in dramatic billowing waves across the left portion of the ceiling plane, these fabric elements introduce organic curvilinear counterpoint to the space's dominant orthogonal geometry, creating visual softness and implying gentle air movement, the textile installation appears as semi-transparent white linen or cotton voile arranged in repeated scalloped curves that catch and diffuse light while partially concealing structural or mechanical systems above, this gesture simultaneously performs functional and aesthetic roles, the lighting overall reads as cool-neutral to slightly warm, approximately 4000-4500 Kelvin, creating clarity without harshness, shadows remain minimal and soft-edged suggesting diffused multi-directional sources rather than dramatic directional lighting, spatial construction employs single-point linear perspective with the vanishing point positioned along the central axis in the deep background, depth cues include diminution of the reformer machines which decrease in apparent size as they recede, atmospheric perspective subtly desaturates and lightens the background passages, the floor material appears as large-format porcelain tile or polished concrete in pale gray-beige with matte-to-satin finish that reflects ambient light without creating distracting specular highlights, textural vocabulary contrasts the smooth coolness of floor and ceiling planes against the warmth of wood elements and the softness of suspended fabric, edge treatment maintains crisp definition where architectural elements meet but softens where fabric drapes and where subtle gradations of light create atmospheric transitions, the overall effect suggests influences from contemporary minimalism, wellness-oriented spatial design, and refined hospitality environments, evoking serenity through material restraint, spatial clarity through geometric discipline, and human-centered warmth through carefully measured organic interventions, the mood registers as contemplative, focused, serene yet energized, inviting physical engagement while maintaining meditative calm, the space implies durational experience of sustained practice rather than transient passage, positioning the viewer as both observer of spatial harmony and potential participant in the bodily practices the environment supports.
Impulse is a Pilates studio interior designed for women in Taiwan. The space covers 165.2 square meters and includes a counter, a consultation area, a locker area, an exercise area and a lounge. The design follows a wabi-sabi style, with curved forms, wood and a soft color palette. Curved ceiling drapery, irregular mirrors and chandeliers repeat the same flowing lines. Walls are finished with cement paint and earthy coatings, and details use stone veneer, vinyl flooring, grilles and fabric. Natural light enters from three sides, and a grille screen shapes a bright lounge.
