2021 Hua Chenyu Mars Concert Stage

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025

Peng Guo's 2021 Hua Chenyu Mars Concert Stage commands the visual field as a monumental biomorphic sculptural canopy rendered in pristine titanium white, its organic lattice structure evoking the exoskeletal architecture of deep-sea organisms or the intricate tracery of natural coral formations, the skeletal framework rising on multiple attenuated legs that suggest both the graceful stance of a colossal arachnid and the structural elegance of contemporary parametric design, the composition organized along a sweeping horizontal axis that draws the eye from the left foreground where transparent membrane structures create translucent veils toward the central stage platform beneath the main sculptural element and continuing rightward where massive crowds fill the performance arena in densely packed formations creating a chromatic sea of predominantly warm earth tones punctuated by vibrant red accents suggesting coordinated audience attire, the spatial construction employs atmospheric perspective masterfully with the crisp white structure occupying the middle ground while softer architectural elements recede into a hazy background featuring traditional vessel forms with wooden masts and rigging alongside contemporary geometric buildings, the chromatic palette balances cool neutral whites and grays of the primary structure against warm terracotta and sienna tones of surrounding architecture with verdant green foliage providing organic relief and the pale cerulean sky establishing an overcast diffused luminosity that eliminates harsh shadows while creating even illumination across the entire spectacle, the figure-ground relationship presents the sculptural canopy as positive form against the negative space of sky while simultaneously the gathered audience masses function as textural ground supporting the architectural focal point, compositional vectors radiate outward from the central performance area creating centrifugal energy while the canopy's sweeping curves provide centripetal containment, the edge treatment throughout exhibits crisp definition in the engineered structure contrasting with the soft atmospheric dissolution of distant elements, stylistically the work demonstrates affinities with contemporary parametric architecture and computational design approaches reminiscent of practices exploring topology optimization and biomimetic structural systems, the overall atmospheric resonance conveys celebratory monumentality and collective human experience gathered beneath protective organic shelter

In preparation for a unique music event, the design features three innovative stage structures, creating an engaging experience for the audience. The stage adapts to the vibrant atmosphere of the daytime and harmonizes with the natural surroundings at night. To meet the acoustic requirements of the extended platform, the team worked collaboratively to integrate the sound system into the stage design, ensuring optimal audio performance.
