Warm honey-toned wood paneling envelops the expansive interior of Marius Mateika's Symphony Orchestra Music Hall, where a sophisticated interplay of natural materials and luminous linear elements creates a contemporary concert venue of remarkable acoustic and visual harmony. The composition centers upon a generous polygonal stage platform rendered in pale maple or birch tones, its geometric faceting suggesting both functional acoustic considerations and deliberate aesthetic refinement. Rising behind and embracing this performance space, tall vertical wall panels in light oak or ash veneer establish a warm, enveloping atmosphere while serving as the canvas for an intricate network of illuminated linear patterns. These glowing white lines trace angular, interconnected geometric pathways reminiscent of crystalline structures, musical notation abstracted into spatial form, or the branching patterns found in nature, their rhythmic repetition creating visual music across the surrounding surfaces. The ceiling presents a dramatic counterpoint in deep charcoal or black, featuring a tessellated diamond pattern that absorbs excess sound while providing visual weight and intimacy to the upper reaches of the hall. Suspended from this dark canopy, a sculptural acoustic reflector panel finished in the same warm wood tones as the walls floats above the stage, its angled surfaces studded with constellation-like point lights that evoke both starfields and the precision of acoustic engineering. The seating area fills the lower third of the composition, rows of coordinated seats in warm taupe or camel upholstery with dark frames arranged in gentle curved tiers that embrace the stage. A sweeping balcony level echoes this embrace, its curved parapet continuing the wood vocabulary while glass railings maintain sightlines. The lighting throughout achieves extraordinary balance, with the linear wall elements providing ambient warmth, the ceiling fixtures offering focused illumination, and the overall scheme creating an atmosphere simultaneously intimate and grand. The chromatic palette maintains disciplined restraint, working entirely within warm neutrals from pale honey through rich amber to deep charcoal, with the glowing white linear elements providing essential visual rhythm and contemporary energy against this organic backdrop.
The main objective was to achieve an entirely new acoustic standard, tailored specifically for symphony orchestra performances of the highest caliber. The designer adopted a Lego constructor philosophy, wherein, in collaboration with acousticians , he meticulously devised several standard elements such as rhombuses, triangles, and both smooth and ribbed planes. Subsequently, he methodically assembled the interior using these components, adjusting their placement, adding or subtracting as necessary, to achieve a harmonious blend of acoustical excellence and aesthetic appeal.
