Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024
Tomohiro Kaji's Dotline Corporate Identity manifests as a spectacular environmental graphics application adorning a suspended monorail vehicle, presenting a masterful demonstration of large-scale visual identity deployment across three-dimensional transportation infrastructure. The composition commands immediate attention through its bold deployment of overlapping circular forms rendered in a vibrant polychromatic palette spanning emerald green, cadmium vermillion, golden yellow, cobalt blue, deep ultramarine, and bright tangerine orange against a pristine white ground. The geometric vocabulary consists entirely of circles and ring forms of varying scales, some solid and saturated, others appearing as open outlines or transparent overlapping shapes that create sophisticated optical mixing where colors intersect. The compositional architecture follows a dynamic diagonal flow from the darker left terminus toward the lighter right section, establishing visual movement that echoes the kinetic function of the vehicle itself. The figure-ground relationship achieves remarkable clarity despite chromatic complexity, with negative white space functioning actively to prevent visual congestion while allowing individual color moments to breathe and resonate. The circular motifs exhibit careful consideration of scale hierarchy, with larger dominant forms anchoring the composition while smaller satellite circles create rhythmic punctuation across the elongated horizontal format. Natural daylight illumination under clear cerulean skies reveals the true chromatic intensity of the applied graphics, with strong sunlight from the upper left casting subtle shadows beneath the suspended vehicle and creating luminous saturation in all color passages. The aerial positioning against blue sky establishes the vehicle as a floating canvas, transforming infrastructure into moving public art. Edge treatments throughout demonstrate precision vinyl application with crisp geometric boundaries, while color overlaps create tertiary hues through transparent layering effects suggesting digital design origins. The stylistic approach resonates strongly with contemporary geometric abstraction, drawing upon the Bauhaus legacy of primary color deployment, the playful geometry of Alexander Calder's mobiles, and the systematic color explorations of Josef Albers, while maintaining distinctly contemporary graphic design sensibilities appropriate for corporate visual identity applications.
Dotline has been facing a huge business challenge, which is as same as others in the welfare industry: a shortage of human resources. This identity system design is to inspire a company’s vision to their staff, candidates, and related people. The company’s vision is Social Heroes. Dotline sees all staff who come for help in someone's daily life as heroes. The logo is a graphical symbol of a hero flipping a cloak and moving forward designed from the letters, D+L. As Dotline provides 7 business categories, the logos come in 7 different colors with each business name typed with a brand typeface
