Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2024

Warm honey-toned maple veneer dominates the visual field in Masato Kure's Yinchuang Zhong Shu Ge Book Store, establishing an enveloping architectural environment where floor, walls, and ceiling merge into a unified material language of natural wood grain running horizontally across every surface, creating a remarkable sense of cohesive spatial warmth reminiscent of being held within a living organism of knowledge and contemplation. The composition employs emphatic one-point linear perspective with the vanishing point positioned precisely at center, where a luminous aperture draws the eye inexorably forward through what appears as an infinite canyon of literature, the converging diagonal lines of stepped floor platforms and symmetrically flanking bookshelves creating powerful directional vectors that propel visual movement deep into the space. The chromatic palette operates within an extraordinarily refined analogous harmony of warm neutrals spanning from pale champagne and blanched almond through golden ochre to deeper caramel tones, punctuated only by the chromatic accents of book spines in coral, cerulean, viridian, and vermillion that create rhythmic visual incidents across the otherwise monochromatic field. Illumination emanates from concealed LED strips integrated within each shelf unit, producing a diffused ambient glow that renders the entire structure luminous from within while soft zenithal daylight filters through the exposed industrial ceiling grid above, mixing cool natural light with warm artificial sources to achieve balanced color temperature throughout the space. The spatial construction demonstrates masterful manipulation of perceived infinity through mirror-like bilateral symmetry, graduated scale diminution, and atmospheric foreshortening as identical modular shelf units recede toward the distant focal point where additional stacked volumes continue the procession into apparent endlessness. Rectangular openings punctuate the left wall revealing living green moss panels that introduce biophilic elements and complementary chromatic relief against the dominant warm wood tones, their organic irregular textures providing vital contrast to the precise rectilinear geometry of the shelving system. The stepped floor functions simultaneously as circulation path, seating amphitheater, and display surface, its broad horizontal treads inviting pause and contemplation while maintaining forward momentum through the processional sequence. Surface texture throughout maintains consistent smooth milled finish with visible wood grain creating optical texture that adds visual interest without disrupting the serene minimalist aesthetic. Edge treatment throughout favors crisp geometric definition with hard transitions between planar surfaces creating shadow lines that articulate the modular construction logic. The atmospheric resonance evokes sacred library traditions from monastic scriptoria to enlightenment reading rooms, transformed through contemporary material sensibility into a secular temple dedicated to the written word, its meditative stillness and enveloping warmth creating conditions for absorbed intellectual engagement and quiet discovery.

The bookstore represents Ningxia's cultural blend with its elegant design and iconic mid-air crossing bookshelves, reflecting diverse knowledge and interactions. In a high-ceilinged space, these shelves foster a dynamic ambiance, engaging visitors in a nexus of ideas. It transcends being just a book space, evolving into a lively intersection for literature, people, and cultures, thus nurturing a 'vibrant community' that encourages knowledge and cultural exchange.
