Project Nebula Miniaturized Map Technology Device

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Matte charcoal surfaces and transparent geometric chambers command the visual field in Saes's Project Nebula Miniaturized Map Technology Device, where a cylindrical technological instrument hovers at a dynamic diagonal above a spirally-ribbed bowl base, creating a composition of remarkable tensile energy and suspended animation. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated neutral register dominated by deep graphite grays approaching Mars black, punctuated by the warm amber and honey tones visible through the device's transparent midsection housing intricate honeycomb lattice structures reminiscent of both biological tessellation and advanced computational matrices. The compositional architecture employs a striking diagonal vector that slices across the visual field at approximately forty-five degrees, establishing dynamic asymmetrical balance against the stable horizontal plane of the surface and the grounding presence of the bowl beneath. Spatial construction achieves remarkable depth through atmospheric perspective suggested by the soft warm gradient of the background wall transitioning from cream to subtle dove gray, while the crisp shadows cast upon the luminous white surface anchor objects firmly within three-dimensional space. The lighting paradigm establishes a gentle raking illumination from the upper left, creating soft penumbral shadows that model form with subtlety while allowing specular highlights to articulate the glossy finish of the bowl's spiraling ridges. Textural differentiation proves masterfully orchestrated: the faceted geometric treatment of the upper cylinder suggests machined precision and mineral crystallography, the central transparent chamber reveals an interior architecture of hexagonal cells containing warm-toned materials, and the lower cylindrical section maintains smooth matte opacity broken only by minimal interface elements. The bowl base exhibits rhythmic concentric ridging that spirals inward, creating visual movement that counterpoints the suspended instrument's arrested diagonal trajectory. Edge behavior alternates between hard geometric definitions at machined boundaries and softer atmospheric transitions where objects meet ambient space. The environmental staging includes thoughtfully positioned organic elements—smooth river stones at left, a wooden cutting board bearing fresh vegetables at right—establishing a domestic context that domesticates technological innovation within quotidian life. The overall atmospheric resonance suggests contemplative stillness, the frozen instant of levitation implying either ascent or descent, potentiality held in perfect equilibrium, inviting meditation upon the relationship between advanced human-made systems and natural organic forms.

Nebula Project is a device that incorporates a miniaturized Modified Atmosphere Packaging MAP technology system for food preservation. It represents Saes's first Industrial Design project, aimed at implementing design driven innovation methodologies within the company and exploring their applicability in laboratory workflows. It is estimated that approximately 930 million tons of food were wasted in 2019, with around 60% of it being discarded by consumers at home. Nebula aims to address these challenges by leveraging cutting edge technology to empower individuals to reduce food waste.
