Hyatt Centric Gaoxin Xi’an Mural Art

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Jansword Zhu's Hyatt Centric Gaoxin Xi'an Mural Art presents an expansive hospitality interior where a monumental wall mural commands immediate visual attention, its sinuous forms rendered in a palette of sage green, terracotta orange, cream, and muted coral that cascades across vertical slatted panels creating rhythmic interruption of the pictorial surface. The compositional architecture employs a sophisticated diagonal reading pattern, with the eye drawn from the dramatic mural at upper left through the layered middle ground of dining furniture toward the active culinary station at right where a chef in pristine white becomes a secondary focal point of human activity. The chromatic strategy achieves remarkable unity through analogous warm tones—burnt sienna leather chairs, honey-toned wood flooring laid in chevron pattern, amber accent lighting from pendant fixtures—punctuated by cooler sage and dove gray upholstery that prevents thermal monotony. The ceiling grid of recessed coffered panels with integrated spotlighting creates zenithal illumination that washes evenly across the space while linear pendants provide intimate pools of warmer light at table level. Spatial construction follows classical one-point perspective with the vanishing point situated beyond the open kitchen, drawing guests visually into the culinary theater. The textural inventory reveals extraordinary material richness: polished stone countertops, woven textile cushions with geometric ikat patterns in coral and cream, brushed metal chair frames, glossy ceramic vessels, and the matte patina of painted wood slats. Edge treatment varies purposefully from the crisp geometric lines of architectural millwork to the organic flowing contours within the mural itself, creating dynamic tension between structured environment and artistic expression. The stylistic coordinates suggest contemporary hospitality design informed by mid-century modernist principles and regional artistic heritage, achieving an atmosphere of sophisticated warmth that invites both intimate conversation and communal celebration.

Stretching 61 meters in length and rising 5 meters in height, these murals embody the theme of "The Whisper of Silk and The Song of Horses." They artistically depict the historical origins of the Silk Road and the culturally rich city of Xi'an through a contemporary lens. The first section of the mural, resembling an abstract dragon head, draws inspiration from an engine. The second segment showcases three dynamic horses inspired by the terracotta army horse, jade horse, and horse stone carving in in Xi’an, symbolizing the three dynasties that established their capital in Xi’an.
