Pottery Art Gallery Mixed Use Architecture

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Young Jae You's Pottery Art Gallery Mixed Use Architecture commands the visual field through a masterful orchestration of geometric volumes and material dialogues, presenting a contemporary mixed-use complex captured at street level under luminous midday atmospheric conditions with high, diffused cloud cover casting even, shadowless illumination across the façades. The compositional architecture employs a sophisticated asymmetrical balance, with the primary focal point residing in the striking pyramidal relief pattern adorning the tower's white precast concrete skin at right of center, its three-dimensional triangular modules creating a rhythmic tessellation that animates the surface through light and shadow interplay even under soft illumination. Secondary attention flows leftward to the sweeping curtain wall glazing that wraps the lower podium structure in cool teal-tinted reflective glass, its curved profile introducing organic counterpoint to the rectilinear massing above. The chromatic palette operates within a refined analogous harmony of cool neutrals—dove gray, warm cream white, oxidized copper or corten-toned cladding panels at ground level delivering earthy warmth against the predominant cool tonality. Tertiary elements include the verdant rooftop plantings and street-level landscaping introducing viridian and yellow-green accents that soften the architectural geometry. Spatial construction demonstrates accomplished two-point perspective recession, with the corner positioning revealing multiple façades simultaneously while urban context buildings establish depth through atmospheric diminution. The material vocabulary speaks to contemporary parametric design sensibilities, where the perforated and faceted surfaces suggest computational form-finding methodologies. Edge behaviors shift between the crisp, hard delineations of the white geometric tower and the softer, reflective transitions of the glass volumes, creating visual hierarchy through tactile contrast. The overall atmospheric resonance suggests progressive urbanism celebrating craft heritage through innovative architectural expression, the building's name referencing ceramic traditions metaphorically embodied in the carefully articulated surface treatments.

The Pottery Art Gallery located in Daegu, Alpha City, is designed to maximize versatility for various purposes, incorporating a layout that overcomes the topographical features. The exterior features two distinct masses stacked on top of each other. The lower level consists of public spaces accessible to visitors, while the upper level comprises private research spaces. The design of the courtyard is inspired by the sinuous shape of pottery, opening up towards the outside and enclosing the inner space. This maintains the internal aspect of the courtyard space while adapting to the urban axis.
