Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024
Sweeping cerulean waters command the upper register of this aerial composition, where Jiangsu Architetural Landscape Design Institute Co., Ltd's Yichang Riverside Park Public Spaces unfolds as a masterful dialogue between natural hydrology and contemporary landscape architecture, the river surface rendered in graduated tones from deep teal shadowed by distant mountains through silvered azure where sunlight dances in scintillating patterns of spectral reflection, establishing an expansive horizontal datum against which the sinuous terrestrial interventions below assert their organic geometries. The compositional architecture employs a dramatic diagonal thrust, with the riverbank edge creating a powerful leading line that draws the eye from the lower right foreground toward the misty mountainous horizon at upper left, while secondary curvilinear pathways weave through the designed landscape in biomorphic configurations reminiscent of natural watershed patterns and meandering tributaries. The chromatic palette achieves remarkable sophistication through the interplay of cool aquatic blues and blue-greens dominating approximately sixty percent of the visual field, balanced by warm earthen tones of terracotta pavement, sandy cream hardscape surfaces, and the verdant spectrum of deciduous and evergreen plantings ranging from lime yellow-green of young foliage through deep viridian of mature specimens. Spatial construction employs atmospheric perspective with considerable finesse, the background mountains dissolving into milky cerulean haze while foreground elements maintain crisp definition and saturated coloration, creating a sense of vast depth spanning perhaps several kilometers. The designed landscape reveals itself as a series of interconnected program zones, circular pavilion structures with white spiral frameworks creating vertical punctuation marks against the predominantly horizontal composition, undulating topographic play areas in pale cream tones suggesting either sand or specialized surfacing, and sculptural blue play elements whose organic forms echo the fluidity of the adjacent waterway. Textural variation enriches the visual experience, from the smooth reflective water surface through the granular appearance of beach-like zones to the feathered softness of tree canopies and the precise geometry of pathways articulated with contrasting edge treatments. The lighting conditions suggest mid-morning or early afternoon illumination from a southeastern angle, casting gentle shadows that reveal topographic modeling while maintaining overall luminosity appropriate to clear atmospheric conditions with slight haze reducing contrast in distant zones.
The design project has infused vitality into the transformation and development of Riverside Park, also serving as a model for urban planning and public space designing. Furthermore, the diverse businesses catering to the needs of citizens and potential visitors have effectively augmented the appeal and economic benefits of the park while serving as a refuge for urban dwellers to alleviate stress. The design team has taken care to preserve the historical heritage of the city, maintain local characteristics, and imbue the industrial relic with new functions and values.
