1821 Vintage Bolgrad Sparkling Wine

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

Valerii Sumilov's 1821 Vintage Bolgrad Sparkling Wine packaging presents a sophisticated diagonal arrangement of four wine bottles against a deep charcoal ground, establishing a dynamic compositional rhythm that guides the eye in an ascending trajectory from lower left to upper right across the picture plane. The bottles alternate between warm rose-gold and rich burgundy-amber tones, creating a chromatic dialogue between coral pink hues suggesting crushed raspberry and sunset warmth, and deeper honey-amber tones evocative of aged cognac and caramelized sugar. The compositional architecture employs strong diagonal vectors at approximately forty-five degrees, generating visual momentum while the overlapping bottle forms create rhythmic intervals of positive and negative space. Each bottle features distinctive color-coded label systems utilizing complementary accent blocks in soft lavender-purple, warm tangerine-orange, and cool teal-blue against cream grounds, establishing clear product differentiation while maintaining cohesive brand identity through consistent typographic treatment. The prominent numerical typography of the founding date rendered in bold serif forms commands attention through scale and tonal contrast, while elegant script lettering provides textural counterpoint. Lighting appears to emanate from multiple carefully controlled sources, producing luminous reflections along curved glass surfaces that describe volumetric form while creating jewel-like specular highlights. The gilt foil capsules present textured metallic surfaces catching light in irregular patterns suggesting hand-applied craftsmanship. Shadow passages beneath and between bottles ground the composition while maintaining overall luminosity. The sophisticated interplay between transparent, translucent, and opaque surfaces demonstrates masterful understanding of material rendering, with liquid contents visible through glass walls creating internal luminosity. Edge treatments vary thoughtfully between crisp label boundaries and soft tonal transitions across curved surfaces, contributing to dimensional illusion within the controlled studio environment.

The Bolgrad brand embodies the essence of the southern regions of the Ukrainian coast: light atmosphere, great climate and good winemaking. The year 1821, which is indicated on the label and is its centerpiece, is the year the city of Bolgrad, located in the Odessa region in the south of the country, was founded. Bolgrad is the first Ukrainian producer who decided to bring to the market a sparkling wine in a lower and wider bottle, which is more typical of western producers. The design of this product reflects progressiveness, high status and adherence to European traditions of winemaking.
