K11 Art Mall Retail

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

Radiant concentric rings of magenta, fuchsia, and electric violet spiral inward toward a luminous central void, creating a vertiginous optical vortex that commands immediate visual engagement through its hypnotic rotational energy and chromatic intensity. Carrie Ho's K11 Art Mall Retail interior presents a breathtaking cylindrical architectural composition where segmented panels of translucent and reflective materials alternate between saturated pink-red hues and cool white illumination, establishing a dynamic complementary tension between warm and neutral chromatic zones. The compositional architecture employs radical radial symmetry emanating from a precise central axis, with concentric bands of varying widths creating rhythmic pulsation as the eye travels from periphery to core. Each ring comprises rectangular segments framed by dark metallic mullions that provide structural definition against the overwhelming chromatic saturation, their geometric regularity offering visual anchoring amid the spiraling motion. The chromatic palette explores the full spectrum of magenta derivatives, from pale rose-tinged whites through saturated fuchsia to deep crimson passages, with occasional cerulean and ultramarine accents appearing in reflective surfaces that suggest depth and spatial complexity. Luminosity emanates from multiple sources, with backlit panels creating zones of brilliant white that punctuate the warmer passages, while reflective surfaces multiply and fragment light sources into kaleidoscopic patterns. The spatial construction achieves remarkable depth through forced perspective, the converging rings creating a tunnel effect that draws the viewer into an apparently infinite recession toward the glowing central terminus. Surface textures alternate between glossy reflective panels that mirror surrounding colors and matte translucent sections that diffuse light into soft chromatic fields. Edge treatments vary strategically, with hard geometric boundaries defining individual segments while softer optical blending occurs where colors meet through reflection. The installation resonates with late twentieth-century light art traditions, evoking the immersive environments of James Turrell's perceptual investigations while integrating contemporary retail spectacle aesthetics. Spherical forms visible in the lower register, rendered in translucent red, introduce organic counterpoints to the geometric rigor, suggesting celebratory or festive associations. The atmospheric resonance achieves transcendent wonder, transforming commercial space into experiential journey through pure chromatic sensation and architectural illusion.

A huge success since opening, K11 Wuhan in China proves that brick-and-mortar retail can thrive with the right amenity-driven design, an inherent sense of fun, and an eye on the future. Verticality was one of the driving ideas behind the retail planning, encouraging visitors to go upward and explore. Designers achieved this by strategically placing vertical landmarks as well as floor-specific landmarks throughout the mall and also connecting to the adjacent mall via an external bridge.
