Double Barn House

Katarzyna Starzyk's Double Barn House emerges through the deepening blue hour as a masterful study in architectural duality, where the stark geometry of the gabled form creates an arresting dialogue between solid and void, opacity and transparency. The composition centers upon a frontal elevation that commands the frame with bilateral symmetry, the pitched roofline forming a perfect isoceles triangle that draws the eye inexorably toward the apex before descending along clean diagonal edges clad in what appears to be a deep slate or charcoal standing-seam metal panel system. This austere exterior envelope, rendered in cool blue-gray tones that harmonize with the twilight sky, frames an extraordinary full-height glazed facade that reveals the warm amber interior like a lantern set within a protective shell. The fenestration system employs a grid of black steel mullions that subdivide the glass expanse into geometric panels, themselves echoing the triangular gable peak in their upper termination. Within this transparent membrane, exposed timber rafters radiate outward in rhythmic parallel lines of honey-toned wood, their warm ochre and raw sienna hues creating compelling chromatic tension against the cool exterior cladding. The spatial layering achieves remarkable depth through overlapping planes: the foreground timber deck extends horizontally, contemporary wire furniture establishes human scale, the glass wall mediates between exterior and interior, while brick masses and interior partitions recede into illuminated depth. Warm artificial lighting suffuses the interior volumes with a golden glow suggesting temperatures around 2700 Kelvin, while wall-mounted sconces create localized pools of radiance at threshold conditions. The landscape setting features mature pine trees whose organic silhouettes provide biomorphic counterpoint to the crystalline architectural geometry, their dark green needles and textured bark establishing naturalistic context. The compositional balance achieves dynamic equilibrium through the centered primary volume offset by the secondary wing visible at right, connected through a covered passage whose timber-lined soffit creates spatial continuity.

Double Barn is a contemporary house located in the suburbs of Warsaw, designed for a family of four. The challenge was to create a modern, yet timeless house design, referring to the traditional architecture of Mazovia and adapting to the context of nature. In order not to overwhelm the surrounding single-family housing with its size, the house was divided into two interconnected blocks. From the inside of the house, mainly bright elements of HPL boards are visible, which makes it feel cozy. At the same time, the dark façades made of graphite tiles blend the house into the surroundings.
