Flow Bar

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

Bo Zhou's Flow Bar commands attention through its extraordinary ceiling installation of metallic teardrop forms suspended in a precise orthogonal grid, their polished surfaces reflecting ambient light while their bulbous silhouettes descend into the shadowed hospitality space below, creating a visual rhythm that transforms functional architecture into sculptural spectacle. The compositional architecture demonstrates masterful deployment of repetition and variation, with approximately sixty pendulous elements arranged in regimented rows that paradoxically evoke both industrial precision and organic fluidity, their teardrop morphology suggesting captured moments of liquid suspension frozen in metallic permanence. The chromatic palette operates within a restrained tonal range dominated by warm taupe ceiling panels, gunmetal and pewter metallic surfaces exhibiting subtle gradations from cool steel to warm bronze depending on reflected light angles, and deep charcoal shadows that envelop the lower spatial registers. Luminosity enters primarily from a horizontal clerestory window at the rear, backlighting a solitary figure whose silhouette establishes human scale against the architectural drama, while the metallic drops create localized highlights and shadowed concavities that animate the ceiling plane with chiaroscuro depth. The spatial construction establishes three distinct zones: the luminous ceiling realm populated by suspended forms, the transitional middle zone where massive concrete columns with rough aggregate texture anchor the vertical dimension, and the shadowed ground plane occupied by the angular bar counter with its reflective stainless steel and dark stone surfaces. Edge behaviors oscillate between the crisp geometric profiles of architectural elements and the soft gradations where metallic reflections dissolve into ambient shadow, while the textural vocabulary juxtaposes industrial brutalism of exposed concrete against the seductive smoothness of polished metal, creating material dialogues that speak to contemporary design's embrace of honest materiality.

Flow is a bar interior located in Shengyang, China. The space measures 180 square meters and has a long and narrow structure. An intentionally slanted wall separates the interior from the street. A deep industrial ink color covers every surface, creating a quiet atmosphere. A line of narrow windows reconnects the inside with the outside. A large artwork of rounded water drops is set on the ceiling in a vertical and horizontal order. Hidden light sources are embedded in the ceiling and walls. The hexagonal bar counter is cut like a diamond. Cement, metal, glass and wood are used.
