Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023
Gao Shanxing's Sunac Snow Park Ski Resort presents a monumental architectural composition that commands the visual field through its dramatic horizontal sweep and sculptural volumetric dynamism, the facade functioning as the primary focal point where alternating bands of white and slate-gray cladding create a powerful rhythmic articulation reminiscent of geological stratification or the undulating forms of snow drifts frozen in perpetual motion across a mountainous terrain. The compositional architecture employs a sweeping diagonal thrust from lower left ascending toward upper right, generating dynamic tension against the stabilizing horizontal datum of the ground plane rendered in cool gray pavement modules arranged in a grid pattern that provides geometric counterpoint to the organic fluidity above. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated restricted range dominated by titanium white, neutral grays ranging from pale silver to deep charcoal, punctuated by strategic chromatic accents including a vibrant coral-red spiral form embedded within a perforated metallic surface at left that functions as a visual anchor drawing the eye into the composition's secondary zone. Cerulean blue typography and graphic elements provide additional chromatic relief against the predominantly achromatic envelope. The luminosity conditions suggest overcast diffused natural light creating soft shadow behavior and minimizing harsh contrasts while allowing the material qualities of the aluminum composite panels to read with subtle tonal gradation. Spatial construction employs atmospheric perspective with the expansive sky occupying approximately forty percent of the image area, its pale powder blue graduating toward warmer tones near the horizon establishing infinite depth against which the architectural mass asserts its powerful presence. The building's curvilinear facade creates a sense of embracing gesture toward the forecourt, the sweeping forms suggesting movement and fluidity while the hexagonal perforations in select panels introduce pattern variation and visual porosity. Edge treatment alternates between crisp linear definitions at panel joints and softer transitions where curved surfaces recede into atmospheric distance. The work demonstrates clear affiliations with contemporary parametric architecture and organic modernism, evoking comparisons to the fluid geometries of Zaha Hadid and the biomimetic explorations of contemporary Chinese architectural practice, establishing an aesthetic vocabulary that celebrates technological sophistication while honoring natural forms.
With its huge building volume, unique architectural shape, and professional ski track, Sunac Snow Park not only naturally integrates into the surrounding mountains of Dujiangyan, but also deeply blends into the lives of ice and snow lovers. At the same time, combined with regional characteristics, with Bashu culture as the core, cultural symbols, and architectural design are integrated to create a landmark building with unique regional characteristics.
