Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2023
Li Xiang's Shenzhen Zhongshuge Bookstore presents an extraordinary architectural composition where colossal gear-shaped bookshelves dominate the visual field, their radial forms creating a mesmerizing spiral that draws the eye inexorably toward an infinite vanishing point at the composition's left center. The primary focal elements consist of two massive circular structures rendered in pristine white with deep crimson accents along their serrated edges, evoking the mechanical precision of industrial cogs while simultaneously functioning as functional book storage systems housing thousands of volumes arranged in concentric rings. The chromatic palette establishes a dramatic dialogue between the warm burgundy-red of the gear teeth and structural elements against the cool neutral whites of the shelving units, all grounded by a profound obsidian black floor that creates perfect mirror reflections doubling the visual complexity of the space. The reflective floor surface, polished to an almost liquid sheen, generates a symmetrical axis that bisects the composition horizontally, creating an otherworldly sense of infinite depth through this doubling effect. Illumination emanates from embedded LED strips tracing the curved architectural forms, casting a warm amber glow that accentuates the three-dimensional modeling of each shelf tier while recessed ceiling spots provide supplementary ambient lighting across the gridded dark ceiling plane. The spatial construction employs a sophisticated interplay between actual depth recession through the spiral book corridors and reflected illusory depth below, creating a vertiginous sense of architectural impossibility that references both baroque ceiling paintings and contemporary parametric design. Edge treatment varies deliberately between the crisp hard boundaries of the gear mechanisms and the softer transitions where warm light bleeds into shadow zones. The overall atmospheric resonance suggests a temple dedicated to knowledge, where the mechanical metaphor of rotating gears implies the perpetual motion of ideas and intellectual discovery.
Inspired by the rapid development and achievements of the project location, Shenzhen Zhongshuge is created to pay tribute to the countless pioneers in this immigrant city. The spiral bookshelf is used as a symbol to show the rapid development of history and arouse the thinking of visitors at the same time. The unconventional design approach to fuse commerce and art breaks the shackles of the monotonous attributes of a space bound to function, conveys the brand's values, brings a new and novel place gene to consumers' shopping experience.
