Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022
ALICE XI ZONG's Kanji Posters series presents a striking visual meditation where calligraphic tradition intersects with contemporary digital aesthetics, displayed here as a backlit panel mounted on a weathered wooden pedestal against concrete architectural surfaces that create an austere gallery-like environment. The composition centers on a dramatic black rectangular field wherein multiple visual languages converge: a bold white brushstroke character dominates the right portion, its gestural energy captured in the thick-to-thin modulation characteristic of traditional ink brush technique, while the left side features a luminous gradient sphere transitioning from cool cerulean through soft lavender to warm rose, suggesting celestial orbs or digital light phenomena. Above this spherical element, a dynamic diagonal brushstroke combines warm golden ochre and teal pigments in a sweeping gesture that introduces organic movement against the geometric precision elsewhere. The typographic element "OUT OF FOCUS" rendered in a distressed sans-serif face occupies the compositional center, framed by a subtle rectangular border that anchors the text while allowing it to float within the surrounding darkness. Small white geometric accents—vertical bars, dot matrices, and linear elements—punctuate the corners and edges, creating a systematic rhythm that references interface design and digital grid structures. The chromatic strategy employs a sophisticated tension between warm metallics and cool digital hues, with the gold-teal brushwork providing thermal contrast against the cool gradient sphere. The overall tonal structure operates in low-key register with selective luminous accents that create depth through value contrast rather than traditional perspective. Edge treatments vary deliberately: the calligraphic stroke exhibits organic feathered edges while geometric elements maintain crisp precision, this juxtaposition embodying the work's conceptual dialogue between handmade and digital mark-making traditions.
The Kanji shapes and strokes represent the initial state and infinite existence of the surroundings. Inspired by the brushstrokes of Chinese calligraphy, the study of contextual ideas, the blend of styles, and cultural attention, the inclusive mentality of the spaces in between the shapes conferred by the strokes shows exquisite elegance and luxuriant cultural implications of Chinese calligraphy. Each poster is made out of a combination of the traditional Chinese element, bringing all the inspirations together and creating a unique, delicate Chinese style of impressionism.
