Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022
Zijie Liu's Wheel X Multifunction Steering commands immediate attention through its sculptural presence within a refined automotive interior environment, where the circular form establishes a powerful geometric focal point against the softly curved dashboard surfaces rendered in sophisticated neutral tones ranging from warm titanium grays to cool silver-white gradients. The compositional architecture employs a dynamic three-quarter perspective that reveals the steering mechanism's dimensional complexity, with the primary circular rim creating a dominant visual anchor while secondary internal elements including the integrated digital display cluster and tactile control interfaces establish a clear hierarchical progression toward the center hub. The chromatic palette maintains remarkable restraint, orchestrating variations of pearl gray, brushed aluminum silver, and subtle champagne undertones that create visual cohesion while permitting material differentiation between the textured grip surfaces featuring fine diamond-pattern knurling and the smooth metallic structural components. Illumination appears to emanate from a diffused overhead source positioned slightly forward, casting gentle gradations across the curved surfaces and producing soft penumbral transitions that accentuate the three-dimensional modeling of each component. The spatial construction creates convincing depth through overlapping planes, with the steering column emerging from the lower frame edge while the dashboard environment recedes into atmospheric softness behind. Surface textures communicate distinct tactile properties: the grip zones suggest a refined mesh material providing secure purchase, while the central hub and structural spokes present polished surfaces with subtle reflective qualities. Edge treatment varies purposefully, with crisp definitions at mechanical interfaces softening toward organic transitions where components meet environmental surfaces. The overall composition evokes contemporary automotive design philosophy aligned with minimalist Scandinavian influence and futuristic mobility concepts, suggesting affinities with progressive transportation design studios. The atmospheric register projects technological sophistication balanced with approachable ergonomic warmth, inviting contemplation of human-machine interface harmony.
Wheel X is a concept steering wheel designed for future cars. The form responds to the different needs of drivers in different driving situations. The grip extends and rotates automatically to switch between three modes: unmanned driving, natural driving and sports driving. In the natural state, the shape is round and smooth. When a button is pressed, the grip turns from an O shape to a W shape, the inner surface gains a bump texture and dynamic lighting appears on the outer side. The skeleton is zinc alloy and the shell uses PU and TPEE.
