The Ring Retail Development

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2022

Sweeping curves of burnished gold handrails trace an elegant orbital pathway through a soaring atrium where biophilic design principles achieve their fullest architectural expression in Lead8's The Ring Retail Development, presenting a vertiginous celebration of nature integrated within commercial space that rewards sustained visual exploration from this elevated vantage point positioned approximately three stories above ground level where the compositional armature reveals itself as a masterful spiral descending through multiple retail levels interconnected by this sinuous pedestrian walkway that functions simultaneously as circulation infrastructure and experiential journey through cultivated greenery. The chromatic orchestration balances industrial metallic tones—silver-gray structural steel comprising the walkway's skeletal framework, warm aureate gold defining the continuous safety railings that provide both functional containment and visual continuity—against an extraordinary palette of botanical greens ranging from the deep viridian of mature broadleaf specimens to the lighter chartreuse of newer growth and the emerald tones of tropical understory plantings cascading down terraced levels visible at frame left. Atmospheric misting systems release gentle vapor clouds that diffuse through the central garden zone, creating an ethereal haze that softens spatial transitions and suggests the humid microclimate of a tropical conservatory while green-tinted accent lighting emerges from within the planted areas, contributing an almost bioluminescent quality to the lower depths. The perspectival system employs dramatic diagonal recession as the elevated walkway sweeps from the lower left foreground through the middle ground before curving rightward toward the towering curtain wall of floor-to-ceiling glazing that floods the entire volume with abundant natural daylight, the gridded mullion pattern creating a rhythmic counterpoint to the organic curves of both pathway and plantings. Human figures distributed along the walkway provide essential scalar reference, their varied attire including saturated reds, warm oranges, and neutral tones introducing chromatic accents that punctuate the predominantly metallic and verdant color scheme while their arrested motion suggests the contemplative pace this environment encourages. The structural tree-form columns visible at right, their branching capitals supporting the glazed canopy above, reference both literal arboreal forms and the biomimetic architectural tradition, while the layered horizontal bands of retail levels at left demonstrate the integration of commercial program within this botanical framework, shop fronts and circulation corridors visible through the green curtain of planted terraces.

The Ring in Chongqing is a ground-breaking ecological retail destination featuring one of China's largest indoor botanic gardens. A first of its kind for the city, the interior design intertwines retail, nature, culture and experience and comes to life with a 42 meter tall botanical garden, interactive sports and culture, and a creative tenant mix. The power of biophilia and nature is front and center, pushing the agenda forward for retail design.
