Chengdu NBD Centre Architecture

QUAD studio's Chengdu NBD Centre Architecture emerges from the twilight urban waterscape as a sculptural constellation of interconnected towers, their undulating glass facades catching the atmospheric blue-gray light of dusk while the central podium blazes with warm amber and cool violet illumination that transforms the architectural void into a theatrical stage of chromatic drama. The compositional architecture employs a tripartite vertical organization with three distinct tower volumes rising from a unified base, their curvilinear profiles suggesting organic growth patterns reminiscent of branching coral or unfurling petals, each mass tapering and swelling with fluid parametric logic that defies the orthogonal conventions of commercial high-rise typology. The chromatic palette operates through sophisticated thermal contrast, with the exterior envelope rendered in silvery grays and cool cerulean blues characteristic of curtain wall glazing under overcast conditions, while the excavated central atrium explodes with cadmium orange, golden yellow, and magenta-violet lighting that suggests an interior world of warmth and activity nestled within the crystalline shell. The lighting paradigm establishes a dramatic nocturnal ambiance where the towers function as luminous beacons against the slate-gray sky, their vertical striations of fenestration creating rhythmic patterns that emphasize the soaring verticality while horizontal sky bridges and connecting elements introduce countervailing horizontal vectors that unify the composition. Spatial construction presents the complex from a low waterfront vantage point, the reflective surface of the foreground water doubling the architectural forms and extending the composition downward while atmospheric perspective softens the background urban fabric of conventional rectilinear towers into a contextual foil that heightens the sculptural distinctiveness of the central subject. The edge treatment throughout favors soft, flowing contours over sharp geometric breaks, creating a formal language that suggests biological morphogenesis translated into architectural tectonics, while the material expression of the glass curtain wall implies smooth, cool surfaces animated by the vertical rhythm of mullions and the gentle curvature of the building envelope that catches and releases light across its undulating surface.

Being the first development in this new financial district. To maximise frontage towards the Jinjiang River, the design pushed the twin tower toward the north western corner of the site allowing visual connection to Jiaozi Park. Below ground the design allowed multiple pedestrian connection to the adjacent plots and metro lines. It is divided into 3 distinctive sections, Below Ground, Podium and Main Towers all interconnected by pockets of public realm. A large sunken civic plaza draws visitors to the ground level where multi-level linkages take visitors to retail and cultural attraction.
