Haimen Agricultural Exhibition Hall

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

gad's Haimen Agricultural Exhibition Hall rises from the pastoral landscape as a luminous crystalline form, its perforated white metal cladding creating a striking counterpoint to the muted earth tones of the surrounding wetland environment, where a tranquil body of water occupies the foreground, its surface reflecting the delicate pink and lavender hues of twilight in horizontal striations that echo the building's emphatic horizontality. The compositional architecture follows a classical landscape format with the horizon line positioned at approximately the lower third, establishing a measured visual rhythm between the expansive sky, the architectural intervention, and the reflective water surface. The structure itself presents a dynamic stepped massing that cascades from right to left, with dramatic angular rooflines featuring sawtooth clerestories that punctuate the skyline with rhythmic triangular forms reminiscent of agricultural vernacular structures reinterpreted through contemporary parametric design language. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated limited range dominated by cool blue-grays, warm pink-lavender atmospheric tones, and the silvery-white luminosity of the building's perforated facade, which creates an optical texture suggesting delicate lacework or traditional paper-cutting craft traditions translated into architectural scale. Traditional vernacular buildings at left featuring characteristic white walls and dark-tiled roofs provide cultural anchoring and scalar reference, their intimate domestic scale contrasting with the monumental yet refined presence of the exhibition hall. The lighting conditions capture the ephemeral magic of blue hour transitioning toward dusk, with diffused ambient illumination creating soft atmospheric perspective and minimal shadow definition, while a single warm amber light visible within the building suggests interior activity and human presence. Spatial depth is articulated through atmospheric layering, with foreground water, mid-ground vegetation and traditional structures, and the commanding presence of the exhibition hall occupying the background plane, all unified by the enveloping twilight atmosphere. The perforated facade pattern suggests both traditional decorative motifs and contemporary computational design approaches, creating a dialogue between heritage craft and technological innovation that speaks to the building's programmatic mission of celebrating agricultural traditions within a forward-looking architectural framework.

Haimen Agricultural Exhibition Hall is located in China's first ecological farm. The architectural motif is derived from the image of barn in agricultural civilization. The appearance of field barn is rooted in the prototype of square barn and round granary. It not only integrated the legalist thought of up her barns solid and know etiquette, and clothing foot but wed bred, but also coincided with the current goal of building a well-off society in China.
