Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022
Bo Chen's Chu Yan Restaurant presents a breathtaking interior composition where dramatic spatial choreography orchestrates a dialogue between tradition and contemporary architectural innovation, the eye immediately drawn to the monumental illuminated wall installation at right that cascades in an undulating wave form, its surface rendered in what appears to be textured glass or crystalline material suffused with luminous cerulean and azure blue light emanating from within, creating an effect reminiscent of bioluminescent ocean depths or frozen waterfalls captured in eternal motion, while a solitary human figure stands silhouetted against this ethereal backdrop with arms outstretched in a gesture suggesting wonder, transcendence, or perhaps ritualistic greeting, positioned at approximately one-eighth the composition's height to emphasize the installation's sublime scale. The left portion presents a contrasting spatial character featuring a sophisticated latticed ceiling structure of geometric wooden frameworks suggesting traditional architectural vernacular reinterpreted through modernist precision, beneath which horizontal louvered screens filter warm amber illumination creating rhythmic bands of light and shadow, their honey-toned warmth providing chromatic counterpoint to the cool blue dominance at right. The floor plane functions as a unifying element, its highly polished surface of what appears to be dark granite or polished concrete creating mirror-like reflections that double the visual complexity, extending both the warm ceiling grid patterns and the dramatic blue luminescence into an inverted dreamscape below. The compositional structure operates on a powerful diagonal axis, with the sinuous edge of the blue installation creating a sweeping S-curve that draws the eye from upper right downward toward the standing figure, while the geometric ceiling grid anchors the left third in orthogonal stability. Color temperature contrast achieves remarkable sophistication through the juxtaposition of warm incandescent tones ranging from pale cream to deep amber against the cool spectrum of ultramarine, cobalt, and cerulean blues, establishing a chromatic dialogue between fire and water, tradition and innovation, intimacy and vastness. The lighting paradigm demonstrates masterful theatrical sensibility, with the internally illuminated blue surface functioning as the primary light source casting an otherworldly glow across adjacent surfaces, while the screened windows emit softer directional warmth suggestive of domestic comfort. Spatial depth articulates through multiple planes: the immediate foreground of reflective floor, the middle ground occupied by the human figure and transitional architectural elements, and the immersive background of the luminous installation that paradoxically advances through its chromatic intensity while receding through its scale. Textural complexity enriches the visual experience through the granular, almost crystalline surface of the blue installation contrasting with the smooth precision of the wooden lattice and the liquid perfection of the reflective floor. The overall atmospheric register achieves a quality of hushed reverence, suggesting a sanctuary where culinary experience transcends mere dining to become ceremonial encounter with beauty.
Chu Yan is a restaurant interior located at Shiliupu Wharf on the Bund in Shanghai, China. The space covers 2500 square meters and is arranged into individual guest areas, private rooms and a waiting area. A large LED wall at the entrance shows a live view of the Huangpu River. Artificial marble, insulating glass and laminated glass are used to reduce weight, block noise and save energy. Sound-absorbing panels and coatings further limit noise. An unfolded scroll image on the corridor ceiling connects the whole design.
