Sunac Guangshen Longshan Commercial Town

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022

Warm ash-blonde timber slats rise in rhythmic vertical cadences to form an abstracted house-form pavilion that commands the central foreground of lu wen's Sunac Guangshen Longshan Commercial Town, establishing an architectural focal point through its pitched roof silhouette rendered in pale birch-toned battens spaced at precisely calibrated intervals to permit visual permeability while defining volumetric enclosure. The compositional armature deploys a sophisticated dialogue between organic biomorphic ceiling forms—cloud-like ivory discs with coved perimeters housing recessed illumination—and the rectilinear geometries of the timber structure below, creating a dynamic tension between curvilinear softness overhead and linear precision at eye level. The chromatic palette operates within a restrained analogous harmony of warm neutrals: honey-toned oak flooring, cream-colored ceiling elements suggesting raw linen or pale maple veneer, touches of verdant forest green from abundant living walls positioned at left featuring circular framed moss installations and trailing philodendrons, while the right periphery introduces chromatic accents through glass vessels containing confections in coral, chartreuse, and amber hues. Illumination emanates from multiple integrated sources including the coved ceiling discs providing diffused ambient warmth approximating 3500K color temperature, supplemented by recessed spotlights creating gentle pools of directional light that model the timber surfaces with subtle attached shadows. The spatial construction employs layered depth zones: an immediate foreground featuring a circular Zen garden installation with moss-covered stones arranged on white gravel suggesting contemplative Japanese garden traditions, a middle ground dominated by the pavilion structure housing modular display vitrines with fern arrangements, and a luminous background where natural daylight penetrates through floor-to-ceiling glazing at left. Textural complexity abounds through the juxtaposition of smooth polished concrete flooring, the linear rhythm of timber battens, the organic irregularity of living plant walls, and the pristine geometric precision of glass display cases.

Order is a necessary condition for a sense of ritual. The wooden ceiling is used as the design language throughout the whole project. The shape is full of changes, and the geometric shape mobilizes the atmosphere of the space. The circular arch elements are used to break the monotonous and long space at the end, giving the space a sense of extension and enhancing the limitation of the space.
