Sakura Shimizu Packaging

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2022

Four elegantly wrapped cylindrical forms stand in measured procession against a seamless neutral gray ground, their identical silhouettes creating a rhythmic visual cadence that speaks to the refined traditions of gift presentation and ceremonial offering within East Asian material culture. Nobuya Hayasaka's Sakura Shimizu Packaging employs a sophisticated monochromatic palette restricted entirely to gradations of cool charcoal gray, ranging from the medium-toned matte paper wrapping to the slightly darker hanging tags, establishing a chromatic unity that elevates restraint to aesthetic philosophy. The compositional architecture operates through horizontal registration, with the four bottles arranged at equidistant intervals along an implied baseline, their vertical axes creating a colonnade effect reminiscent of classical architectural proportion while the gathered paper crowns introduce organic variation above the geometric cylinder bodies. Each package displays a minimal circular emblem positioned at lower center, containing abstracted typographic or symbolic marks rendered in lighter gray against the paper ground, providing subtle differentiation while maintaining visual cohesion across the series. The lighting paradigm employs soft, diffused illumination from above and slightly forward, creating gentle gradations across the curved surfaces that reveal the paper's fine tooth and matte finish while casting subtle contact shadows that ground each form spatially. The gathered paper technique at each bottle's neck creates naturalistic pleating and folding, introducing tactile complexity through the tension between the controlled cylindrical body and the expressive gestural gathering above, secured by narrow cords that form decorative knots and trailing ends. One cord extends languorously across the foreground surface, its serpentine path introducing dynamic movement into the otherwise static arrangement and creating visual linkage between the fourth bottle and the picture plane's lower edge. The textural vocabulary encompasses the smooth matte paper surface, the cord's braided or flat ribbon quality, and the crisp edges of the rectangular hanging tags, each material contributing to a haptic narrative of considered craft.

This package was created as a branding project for a floral artist. All of the brand's tools were created in a uniform gray color, which shows the true colors of the flowers. The packaging is designed in a simple achromatic color so as not to detract from the quality of the client artist's work. The symbol is based on the typography of a Japanese character meaning "flower", and all brand tools are created around this symbol. By using this "kanji" symbol, the client communicated to consumers its position as a Japanese floral artist.
