Smart City Exhibition Design

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Michele Berdugo's Smart City Exhibition Design presents itself from an elevated vantage point as a luminous urban microcosm rendered in predominantly cool spectral hues, with electric cobalt blue and violet-tinged magenta saturating the expansive floor plane while warm amber and golden accents punctuate individual pavilion spaces throughout the composition, creating a chromatic dialogue between technological coolness and human warmth that defines the spatial hierarchy of this vast interior environment. The compositional architecture employs a bird's-eye perspective that transforms the exhibition hall into an abstract grid pattern, with black aluminum truss systems creating a geometric lattice overhead that functions as both practical infrastructure and visual armature establishing rhythmic intervals across the picture plane. The spatial organization reveals careful orchestration of positive and negative volumes, where illuminated white display structures emerge like luminescent towers against the deep ultramarine floor treatment, their vertical thrust counterbalanced by horizontal circulation corridors that guide visitor flow through clearly delineated pathways. Light sources appear predominantly artificial and internally generated, with each pavilion functioning as its own light-emitting volume creating localized pools of warm incandescent glow against the cooler ambient violet wash, while LED strip lighting traces architectural edges and defines boundaries between zones with linear precision. The textural contrast between the industrial matte black of the overhead rigging and the glossy reflective surfaces of the floor creates optical depth, enhanced by the geometric pattern of the floor graphic that suggests street networks and urban mapping conventions rendered in a cartographic visual language.

Smart City is an exhibition design created for an international municipal innovation exhibition and conference held in Tel Aviv, Israel. The design covers 3000 square meters and includes a registration hall, a VIP lounge, business meeting rooms, conference stages and a gala venue. The concept is based on a vertical city rising above an increasingly urbanized world. Hanging and geometric elements are made of aluminum, plexiglass and mesh to keep the weight low. Printed carpets, light boxes and greenery installations complete the setting.
