Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
Monumental arched windows of blackened steel framing flood this double-height interior with abundant natural luminosity, their graceful curves echoing classical architectural traditions while asserting contemporary refinement throughout Art Nesterenko's The Rossmore Penthouse Condominium. The coffered ceiling grid constructed from pale honey-toned timber establishes a rigorous orthogonal counterpoint to the sweeping organic curve of the sculptural white spiral staircase that commands the right portion of the composition, ascending through multiple levels like an unfurling ribbon of pristine alabaster. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated analogous harmony of warm neutrals spanning from creamy ivory through soft taupe to the honeyed warmth of natural wood grain, punctuated by verdant accents from living trees and plantings that occupy a substantial raised planter serving as both spatial divider and biophilic element. Compositionally, the image employs a dynamic asymmetrical balance where the monumental glazing on the left establishes vertical emphasis that is answered by the helical staircase's centrifugal movement on the right, with the middle ground occupied by carefully curated furnishing vignettes including an oval dining table surrounded by upholstered chairs in dove grey beneath an exquisite branching chandelier featuring clustered glass orbs that catch and diffuse incoming daylight. The spatial construction demonstrates masterful atmospheric perspective through the softening of forms in the distant background seating area where neutral-toned sectional sofas create an intimate conversation zone, while foreground elements maintain crisp definition. Lighting conditions suggest late morning or early afternoon golden hour with warm directional sunlight streaming through the expansive fenestration, casting soft-edged shadows across the polished stone flooring and establishing gentle luminosity gradients that model the three-dimensional volumes of architectural elements. The textural interplay between smooth plastered surfaces, the linear rhythm of the timber coffering, crystalline glass orb pendants, and organic foliage creates rich visual interest while maintaining tonal cohesion.
The Rossmore Penthouse is a three-level residence located within an apartment building in Hancock Park, Los Angeles. The interior covers 7,000 square feet and includes four bedrooms and a private roof with a pool. The design is inspired by Art Deco elements. Natural materials and cross laminated timber are used for floors, walls and roofing, creating an open and airy character. A sculptural staircase wraps around an open-sky garden, bringing daylight and outdoor views into the interior. The design joins the historic character of the neighborhood with contemporary interior design.
