Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
Bo Liu's Fuzhou Marriott Riverside Hotel commands the visual field through a masterfully orchestrated double-height lobby space where vertical monumentality meets horizontal hospitality in perfect equilibrium, the eye immediately drawn to a commanding decorative panel positioned centrally against dove-grey veined marble pilasters that rise like contemporary interpretations of classical columns establishing rhythmic verticality throughout the composition. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated tonal range of warm neutrals—taupe, grey, cream, and champagne—punctuated by strategic azure and cerulean accents in upholstered seating and decorative ceramics that activate the otherwise restrained scheme with chromatic vitality. The central textile panel presents golden ochre and amber geometric abstractions suggesting stylized landscape motifs floating among cream-colored cloud forms against a dark ground, functioning as both focal point and cultural anchor within the contemporary spatial framework. Compositionally, the image employs classical symmetrical organization modified by asymmetrical furniture arrangements creating dynamic tension between architectural order and inhabitable informality, with a foreground display featuring warm-toned wooden console tables bearing design publications and black cylindrical vessels containing architectural floral arrangements of palm fronds and pale orchids. The lighting paradigm combines diffused natural illumination filtering through floor-to-ceiling glazing at left with warm artificial sources from cylindrical pendant fixtures suspended from dark circular ceiling elements that punctuate the white soffit, creating pools of intimate warmth within the expansive volume. Material articulation demonstrates exceptional sophistication in the juxtaposition of polished stone, brushed metal mullions, woven textiles, and natural wood, each surface contributing distinct textural resonance to the spatial experience while maintaining harmonic unity through careful tonal calibration.
