Vortex Fireplace

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Dário Sousa's Vortex Fireplace commands the visual field as a suspended sculptural hearth of extraordinary geometric precision, its hexagonal form rendered in what appears to be matte charcoal steel descending from a slender vertical flue that bisects the composition with architectural authority. The primary focal point occupies the central-lower register, a faceted basin whose angular planes catch ambient light to reveal subtle tonal gradations from deep graphite to softer pewter along chamfered edges, creating a crystalline quality reminiscent of mineral formations or origami translated into industrial material. The compositional architecture employs approximate bilateral symmetry anchored by the central vertical axis of the chimney pipe, while the hexagonal hearth introduces dynamic geometry that activates the surrounding space. Behind this commanding object, floor-to-ceiling glazing establishes a secondary compositional layer through its regular grid of black steel mullions, creating a measured counterpoint to the organic profusion of verdant foliage pressing against the exterior. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated restricted range: dominant cool neutrals of slate, iron, and anthracite in the fireplace proper, warm undertones of blonde timber flooring glimpsed at lower left, and the saturated viridian-to-hunter green tapestry of hedge foliage beyond. Spatial construction achieves remarkable depth through layered planes, the suspended object floating in middle ground while the transparent membrane of glass simultaneously reveals distant vegetation and reflects interior luminosity. Edge treatment demonstrates masterful precision, with hard geometric edges defining the fireplace silhouette against the softer, diffused mass of greenery. The lighting paradigm suggests overcast daylight filtering through the living wall, producing even illumination without harsh shadows while allowing the metallic surfaces to exhibit their inherent material character. Stylistically, this work participates in contemporary minimalist furniture design traditions, evoking the sculptural heating objects of Focus and the geometric explorations of parametric design, while maintaining a distinctive voice through its suspended, gem-like configuration that transforms functional necessity into spatial poetry.

Vortex is a suspended fireplace designed for public and private spaces. The asymmetrical form of Vortex refers to the deformation of space and gives the fireplace a strong presence. Vortex offers two combustion options: traditional wood or an automatic bioethanol burner. The bioethanol version provides a real flame without smoke, ash or odours. Vortex is made of carbon steel, shaped by laser cutting and welding, and finished with heat resistant powder coating. The heat output ranges from 5.9 to 10.6 kilowatts.
