Moment Series Sculpture

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2021

Amber-gold resin erupts from a delicate porcelain teacup in Derya Geylani Vuruşan's Moment Sculpture, capturing the ephemeral instant of liquid displacement with extraordinary sculptural permanence, where dozens of individual droplets and tendrils of translucent golden material freeze mid-flight in a corona formation that suggests both violent disruption and graceful choreography. The compositional architecture establishes a dramatic vertical thrust from the stable horizontal base of the saucer through the cylindrical vessel to the explosive radial expansion above, creating a pyramidal silhouette with dynamic asymmetry as individual splash trajectories extend at varying angles and heights. The chromatic relationship between the warm honey-amber of the frozen splash and the cool ivory-white of the porcelain establishes a complementary temperature contrast that heightens visual drama, while the delicate sepia-brown and coral-orange botanical transfers on the cup and saucer introduce tertiary accents that harmonize with the golden resin tones. Illumination appears diffused from the upper left, creating subtle gradations within the translucent resin that reveal internal light refraction and varying degrees of opacity where material thickness accumulates at droplet termini. The shallow depth of field softens the neutral gray background into atmospheric recession, concentrating focal attention on the central sculptural event. Surface texture varies dramatically between the smooth glossy finish of the porcelain, the organic irregular surfaces of the frozen liquid forms, and the weathered patina of the pale wooden surface beneath. Edge behavior transitions from the crisp hard contours of the porcelain rim to the organic undulating boundaries of resin tendrils, some terminating in perfect spherical droplets while others branch into smaller rivulets. The work demonstrates remarkable technical facility in transforming a momentary phenomenon into permanent sculptural form while preserving the visual dynamism of arrested motion.

The heirloom porcelains that make up the work carry the traces of history to the present, while the sculpted glass represents a frozen moment and timelessness. The fact that the glass in antique cups is shaped like it is when a liquid splashes brings together a snapshot of the fluidity with the viewer. Colored glasses preferred as transparent and opaque were selected in accordance with the structure and concept of the cup.
