Evolve 17 Sculpture to Enhance Space

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2021

Davis McCarty's Evolve 17 Sculpture to Enhance Space commands immediate visual attention through its crystalline geometric armature rising monumentally within a contemporary architectural interior, where faceted dichroic panels capture and refract ambient illumination into prismatic spectral dispersions across ceiling and walls, creating an immersive chromatic environment that transforms the surrounding space into a cathedral of refracted light. The sculptural form employs an hourglass or double-pyramid configuration with intersecting triangular planes constructed from what appears to be dichroic glass or specialized iridescent film mounted on a skeletal framework, each facet shifting through the complete visible spectrum from warm amber and cadmium orange through magenta and violet to cool cerulean and viridian depending on viewing angle and light incidence. The compositional architecture establishes a powerful vertical axis anchored within a double-height atrium space, with the sculpture's pinched waist creating dynamic visual tension between expanding upper and lower pyramidal volumes. Floor-to-ceiling glazing admits abundant natural daylight from the left, which interacts with the dichroic surfaces to project luminous caustic patterns onto the white ceiling plane—streaks of cyan, magenta, and spectral yellows that extend the sculpture's chromatic influence beyond its physical boundaries. A figure in motion traversing the mezzanine level provides crucial human scale reference, their fuchsia attire creating chromatic dialogue with the sculpture's magenta facets while motion blur suggests temporal duration and experiential movement through the installation. The spatial construction employs atmospheric perspective through the glazed curtain wall revealing an expansive landscape panorama, establishing the elevated vantage point and creating layered depth planes from interior foreground through architectural middle ground to distant horizon. Surface treatment oscillates between the highly reflective dichroic panels exhibiting mirror-like specularity and the matte architectural surfaces serving as projection screens for refracted light. Edge behavior throughout the sculpture presents crisp geometric definition with hard crystalline transitions between facets, while the projected light patterns create soft diffused edges where spectral colors blend into ambient illumination.

Evolve 17 is a suspended sculpture created for the executive atrium of a corporate headquarters. The work is a prismatic column that stands 7000 mm tall and 1200 mm wide and weighs 250 kilograms. Evolve 17 is built from 161 unique pieces, using dichroic plexiglass, stainless steel, aluminum and mirrors, together with LED light and sunlight. The dichroic panels show different colors from different viewpoints, so the colors shift as visitors walk around the column. A custom aluminum hinge lets each panel rotate and lock at a chosen angle.
