MG iSmart Infotainment System HMI

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

SAIC and Star's MG iSmart Infotainment System HMI presents a sophisticated visual composition where the primary focal point emerges as a dual-screen digital interface ensemble positioned within an automotive cockpit environment, commanding viewer attention through luminous display panels that contrast dramatically against the muted charcoal interior surfaces. The compositional architecture follows an asymmetrical balance scheme, with the rectangular touchscreen infotainment display occupying the left-center field while the circular digital instrument cluster anchors the right portion behind a three-spoke steering wheel, creating a dynamic visual dialogue between geometric forms. The chromatic analysis reveals a carefully calibrated palette dominated by cool neutral tones—graphite, slate, and anthracite blacks—punctuated by strategic digital color accents including cerulean blues, amber weather iconography suggesting warm sunlight, cyan temperature indicators, and luminous white typography that establishes clear visual hierarchy. The tonal structure operates in a predominantly low-key register with the illuminated screens functioning as controlled high-value passages that draw the eye through careful luminosity management. Beyond the interior environment, an atmospheric landscape unfolds through the windscreen, presenting a breathtaking mountainous terrain rendered in soft lavender, dusty rose, and muted salmon hues suggesting golden hour illumination, with layered ridgelines receding through aerial perspective into a pale peach sky. This background treatment employs classical atmospheric depth cues—value diminution, color desaturation, and edge softening—creating remarkable spatial recession that contrasts with the sharp-focused interior elements. The lighting paradigm combines the cool ambient interior illumination with the warm external twilight, establishing a sophisticated temperature counterpoint. Surface textures reveal meticulous attention to material differentiation: the leather-wrapped steering wheel suggests supple tactility through visible stitching details rendered in contrasting red thread, while the brushed metallic trim elements below the central display provide visual interest through their directional surface quality. The interface design demonstrates contemporary automotive human-machine interface conventions with card-based information architecture, modular widget arrangements displaying climate control, weather, navigation, media playback, and contextual applications organized in an accessible grid system. The circular instrument cluster features a sophisticated three-dimensional rendering of a vehicle silhouette centered within concentric gauge rings, demonstrating advanced digital graphics capabilities. Edge treatments throughout maintain crisp definition on interface elements while allowing soft atmospheric transitions in the landscape, creating visual hierarchy through selective focus simulation. Stylistically, this work positions itself within contemporary digital product visualization traditions, employing photorealistic rendering techniques that bridge industrial design documentation and aspirational lifestyle imagery, evocative of premium automotive marketing aesthetics.

SAIC's brand MG was challenged with a new market rollout and needed a custom HMI solution to support this strategic initiative. The design embraces new technology trends centered around connectivity digital touchpoints and smart assistants with an intuitive interface that strengthens consumers' emotional relationships with both the vehicle and the MG brand.
