Parachute Wall Shelf

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Yusuke Watanabe's Parachute Wall Shelf presents itself in this striking compositional study as a remarkably innovative piece of functional sculptural design, captured in a profile presentation that emphasizes both its material character and its relationship to the human form, the image featuring a figure in neutral gray heathered t-shirt and dark trousers holding the elongated accordion-like structure horizontally across the torso, creating a dynamic visual dialogue between organic human anatomy and geometric manufactured precision, the shelf itself unfurling in a graduated chromatic progression that moves with extraordinary subtlety from translucent white through warm flesh tones of buff and peach, transitioning through apricot and melon into progressively saturated cadmium orange hues culminating in vivid vermillion-orange at the composition's right edge, this ombré effect achieved through what appears to be painted or powder-coated metal slats connected by a flexible hinge system allowing the piece to expand and contract like a paper lantern or traditional folding fan, the compositional structure employing an asymmetrical balance with the figure positioned right of center while the shelf extends leftward into negative space, the neutral warm gray background providing chromatic isolation that permits the orange gradient to command complete visual attention, the lighting appears diffused and frontal creating minimal shadow beneath the shelf's pleated folds while softly modeling the figure's arm and hand, the textural contrast between the smooth matte surfaces of the metal slats and the heathered fabric of the garment enriching the tactile vocabulary, edge treatment alternates between the crisp geometric precision of the shelf's corrugated profile and the softer organic transitions of cloth and skin, the overall effect suggesting contemporary Scandinavian or Japanese minimalist design sensibilities with their shared emphasis on material honesty and functional elegance

Parachute is a wall shelf made of sheet metal. When a section is in use, the plank of that section drops down and hangs in place. The hanging plank holds a coat, a magazine or similar items and keeps them from falling. The surface carries colored stripes separated by thin spaces, so the shelf recalls the graphic appearance of a modern parachute and can also be read as wall art. Parachute measures 790 mm in width, 30 mm in depth and 220 mm in height. The name joins the ideas of protecting and falling.
