Pingshan Cultural Cluster Book Mall Bookstore

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Soaring vertical expanses of cool slate-gray concrete establish the dominant tonal register of Jiang & Associates Creative Design's Pingshan Cultural Cluster Book Mall Bookstore, where monumental double-height walls finished in textured cementitious panels create an industrial yet contemplative atmosphere that recalls the adaptive reuse sensibilities of contemporary cultural architecture. The compositional armature operates along a sophisticated diagonal schema, with twin staircases ascending from opposite corners of the ground floor—one occupying the left third of the frame, the other the right—their warm honey-toned oak treads and risers providing chromatic counterpoint to the surrounding gray envelope. Black-finished steel railings with minimal horizontal members trace elegant linear vectors that guide the eye upward through multiple levels visible through the soaring atrium void. The ceiling plane dissolves into a mirrored surface of polished stainless steel that doubles the spatial volume optically, reflecting the constellation of recessed downlights and starburst pendant fixtures that punctuate the upper reaches. Natural oak flooring in a pale ash-blonde tone extends across the ground plane, its warm timber grain establishing a humanizing material presence against the austere concrete backdrop. Modular display cubes finished in kraft paper brown are arranged in loose clusters across the retail floor, their geometric simplicity housing books in casual presentation that invites browsing. The right portion of the composition reveals floor-to-ceiling shelving systems in matching oak, their regular vertical rhythms creating a textural density that contrasts with the openness of the central void. Human figures—a woman ascending the left stair in a taupe coat, another browsing at center in dark clothing—provide crucial scale references that emphasize the architectural grandeur while suggesting the space's function as an inhabited cultural destination. The lighting paradigm combines ambient illumination from the reflective ceiling with focused task lighting from recessed sources, creating a luminous yet intimate atmosphere despite the monumental proportions.

Pingshan Cultural Cluster Book Mall is a bookstore interior inspired by the local Hakka enclosed houses of Shenzhen. The space is divided into a square zone and a round zone. The square zone is oriented to young people, and its layout expands around a central activity area. The atrium walls recall the structured facades of traditional tower buildings, while a mirror finish ceiling extends the view. The round zone is oriented to families and children, with curved book walls and a white spiral staircase. Reading, catering, exhibition and social functions are combined.
