Kanglaibo Resort Hotel

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

A monumental crystalline light installation commands the soaring double-height atrium of Legang Sun, Songtao Meng, and Xiaoxue Ai's Kanglaibo Resort Hotel, its geometric precision creating an inverted pyramid form suspended from the ceiling like a celestial chandelier composed of countless individual LED points arranged in an exacting three-dimensional grid structure that appears to float weightlessly in space, the luminous matrix radiating cool white illumination that cascades downward in perfectly aligned vertical strands creating an effect reminiscent of frozen rainfall or digital constellations made manifest in physical form. The compositional architecture employs a commanding central axis with the light sculpture positioned as the gravitational center of the visual field, drawing the eye upward through the vertical expanse while simultaneously creating a sense of descending luminosity that bathes the lobby space below in ambient radiance. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated neutral register, featuring warm honey-toned travertine or limestone flooring with geometric black marble inlay patterns creating directional pathways, rich walnut wood paneling on towering vertical columns, grey-veined stone wall cladding suggesting natural geological formations, and strategic accent colors introduced through furnishings including deep navy blue upholstered armchairs with coral-orange accent cushions arranged in intimate conversational groupings. The spatial construction demonstrates masterful handling of vertical proportion, the towering columns framing views through to a display wall featuring illuminated shelving with decorative objects, while the flooring pattern establishes clear circulatory pathways through the expansive ground plane. The lighting paradigm combines the dramatic focal illumination of the suspended installation with subtle architectural lighting including cove details and display lighting that creates layered atmospheric depth. Surface textures present a refined material dialogue between the polished reflective floor, the matte wood grain of the columns, the striated stone walls, and the ephemeral quality of the suspended light grid, establishing a contemporary luxury aesthetic that honors natural materials while embracing technological innovation in a harmonious synthesis.

It is a design case for a resort hotel with an indoor area of 16,000 square meters and 19 floors. The hotel is in the Baianshan National Forest Park of Jiangxi Province. The designer creates ethnic-cultural characteristics that given the hotel a unique personality. Moreover, the designer designed a water-saving system for the hotel’s hot-spring bath in the air and each guest room. The system guarantees the user experience of tourists and effectively saves the natural hot-spring resources.
