Plycelain Tableware Collection

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Yuting Chang's Plycelain Tableware Collection presents a masterfully composed still life arrangement of nested ceramic vessels captured from an elevated vantage point that reveals the elegant concentricity of form and the sophisticated interplay between matte white porcelain bodies and delicate blue linear striations that traverse both the cylindrical walls and the distinctive loop handles extending horizontally from each piece. The compositional architecture follows a centralized schema with the stacked vessels creating a vertical hierarchy that draws the eye downward through progressively larger circumferences while the handles establish a cruciform counterpoint extending into the peripheral space. The chromatic palette demonstrates remarkable restraint operating within an essentially monochromatic framework of warm cream whites ranging from pale bone to soft ecru with the sole chromatic accent provided by parallel cobalt blue lines that encircle the vessel rims and continue uninterrupted across the handles creating a visual rhythm of repeating linear elements. The luminosity derives from soft diffused overhead illumination creating gentle gradations across the curved surfaces with subtle attached shadows pooling in the interior depths and delicate cast shadows beneath the projecting handles. The spatial construction employs shallow depth with atmospheric softening in the pale neutral background that recedes without competing for attention. Surface texture reads as satiny matte with the porcelain displaying the characteristic smooth dense quality of refined ceramic while the visible striations suggest laminated construction revealing the material process. Edge treatment varies from crisp hard contours at the vessel rims to softer transitions where curved forms turn away from light. Stylistic coordinates suggest contemporary craft-based design practice with echoes of Scandinavian ceramic traditions and the material honesty principles associated with studio pottery movements while the geometric precision and industrial repetition of decorative elements evokes modernist functionalist aesthetics.

Plycelain -a term coined by Yuting Chang combining plywood and porcelain- is a collection of multilayered slip casting drinkware. Chang creates a contemporary version of blue and white ware through applying slip casting, the mass-production technique of ceramics. By adapting the process of slip casting, layers form, and subtle blue lines are exposed on the cut surfaces, which emphasize the beautiful relationship between assembled parts.
